The Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42)
I came in the sixth hour
To draw from Jacob's well,
Or surely my heart would fell.
To be mocked and scorned
Was more than I could bare.
Their cruel jibes and hate filled looks
Pierced me like thorns.
"Will you give me a drink?" said He.
Startled, I came from my thoughts,
"You are a Jew and I am a Samaritanā¦
How can you ask me?"
And thus He replied,
"If you knew of God's gift,
And who it was that spoke;
He would have given you living water,
If you had but asked."
"Sir, you have nothing to draw with
And the well is very deep.
Where can you get this living water you speak of?
Are you greater than our father Jacob?"
"Everyone who drinks from this well
Will always be denied,
But whoever drinks the water of eternal life
Shall never thirst again."
"Sir, give me this living water,
This eternal lifeā¦
So that I will never thirst
And have to come here again."
"Go, call your husband
And come back," He told me.
How could He have known?
How could this be?
"I have no husband," I replied.
"You are right
In that you have had five.
The man you now with
Is still not one
What you just said is quite true,
You have no husband."
I bowed my head in guilt and shame.
Yes, He knew me
Without speaking my name.
Know Him also of my pain?
Could he not see the emptiness so stark?
I gave myself in what I thought was love
To fill this void in my heart.
"Sir, I can see you are a profit," I said at last.
"Believe me, woman,
A time is coming and has now come
When you'll worship the Father in spirit and truth,
For they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks."
"I know that a Messiah is coming," I stated in hope.
"When He does, He will explain everything to us."
Then He declared, "I who speak to you am He."
My water jar I did leave behind
No condemnation did I receive.
Just a request from Christ, my King.
Many Samaritans from town believed.
I only told them what He had said,
"He told me everything I ever did."
They said to me,
The people of Samaria,
"We no longer believe
Just because of what you said;
Now we have heard for ourselves,
And we know that this man really is
The Savior of the world."
