He knew they were all tired, but Legolas hid it even better than he did. He was always light on his feet, quick with his bow, and smiling. Aragorn didn't know how the Elf could still smile, after all they had been through, but then one night, across the campfire, he caught sight of his eyes.

In that moment, Aragorn forgot to breathe, and his heart ceased to beat. All the Elves were beautiful, but Legolas, with the moonlight and campfire shining upon his long, blonde hair, was the most beautiful by far. Yet, for the first time since they had began their journey, he was not smiling. His beautiful, blue eyes were downcast, and in those eyes, so rich and endless, Aragorn saw the centuries the Elf had lived. He saw the pain and worries he hid, and he wanted nothing more than to protect those eyes from ever becoming downcast again.

Legolas' pointed ears twitched. His head lifted. His mouth curved as he met Aragorn's gaze. "It will be all right, my friend," he said, but Aragorn now understood that, no matter how many times Legolas spoke those words, he was no more sure of their truth than Aragorn or any of their other, equally as weary band members.

He smiled, despite his own worries and the truth he now understood. Legolas hid his fears and concerns so that he might reassure others; Aragorn could certainly do the same for him. "Yes," he said, nodding. "Yes, it will," and he tried to pretend that his words were real and that he didn't tingle inside when he passed a tankard to the Elf who would now forever more haunt his dreams.
