GONE

"She's gone…my baby's gone…" the broken voice whispering in my ear through the phone tore my heart apart. Even though I had been expecting the call ever since I heard the terrible news, it was still a shock.

"I'll be there as soon as I can," I vowed as I silently cursed the miles that separated us at a time like this. He needed me and I needed to be there with him. I knew that some of the people closest to him would resent my being there, feeling that I was intruding during a private time for the family. But, in my heart, in both our hearts, I was family too. He wanted me there and that was all that mattered.

I heard a soft click as he hung up the phone on his end. Sighing heavily, I gently replaced the receiver in the cradle and headed for the front door. I dug my keys out of my pocket as I hurried to my blue sedan parked in the driveway. Time was too precious. I couldn't waste it packing a bag. If I needed anything when I got there, I could buy it.

"Hang on. Buddy…I'm on my way. I'll be there soon." I sent a telepathic message to my other half as I backed out of the drive and sped down the street to be at my best friend's side at a time when he needed me the most.
