"Spence, will you be okay?" JJ asked, placing a hand on his forearm, sitting on his desk.
Spencer Reid looked up from Jason Gideon's book and sighed at her. "I don't know, really. His funeral's today and Steven wants me to be there but I don't know if I want to."
"You have to be there. If not for yourself, do it for Steven and Jason. Jason would have wanted you there for Steven." JJ replied.
"JJ, when your sister died how did you feel?" Spencer whispered, closing the book. JJ was caught off guard by the question and gulped slightly.
"I guess I was traumatised. I didn't understand death all that much at the time but I was shocked, I guess."
"That's how I feel right now." Spencer replied.
"Jason was a great guy. And to lose him feels like losing a father figure to me." JJ sighed, sitting down in a chair.
"Jason was more than a mentor to me. He was a dad."
"Jason was a lot of things to a lot of people and it all comes down to he's a great guy and a father figure." JJ smiled.
"Yeah... I remember when we used to play chess together and he'd always pop a beer open whilst I opted for water, he'd say that one of us was going to checkmate the other but he didn't know who. We always alternated who won." Spencer smiled back. JJ opened her arms and invited him in for a hug which he gladly responded to.
"Come to the funeral. You'll be okay." JJ promised.
"I don't know... It was horrible enough seeing him dead but in a coffin? It makes it so real. I was okay with him being somewhere so I can visit sometimes but now that the possibility is gone... I just want to shut it out." Spencer confessed.
JJ knew that she was getting nowhere so she stood up and tightened her belt around her black trench coat, collecting her umbrella.
"Well, you know where to find all of us." she said, sighing.
Soon after she left, Penelope Garcia came into the room wearing a tight black dress, black heels and a red blazer.
"Junior G-Man?" she whispered, spotting Spencer sitting down, sighing.
Spencer looked up and smile lightly at her.
"Garcia, you off?" he asked.
"Yeah. You better hurry as well before they start the ceremony." she said, getting her bag off Kate's desk which Spencer was supposed to be looking after.
"Yeah, I'm not going..." he replied. Penelope's eyes widened as she quickly made her way to him and plopped herself in the chair that JJ has occupied moments before.
"Not going? Reid, this is Jason Gideon's funeral for heaven's sake!"
"And spot the unrealistic thing in that sentence." Spencer said, raising an eyebrow at her. Garcia thought about what she had just said and sighed. "He's not supposed to be dead... He's supposed to be waiting for me to play chess with him like the old days..."
"I know... And we are all hurting just as much as you but Steven needs you to be there, remember? You're like a brother to him. You were like a son to Gideon. Please come. For them?" she begged.
Spencer turned to her and finally nodded. So Garcia stood up and offered her hand to him which he gladly accepted.
"I guess you only say goodbye once." he said sadly.
"I guess. But you can say hello as much as you like." Penelope smiled before leaning her head on his shoulder and leading him out of the BAU.
There you go! x
