Pretty obviously, this is post - or, indeed, during - Boomerang II. The lyrics are Trisha Yearwood's, and the characters are Bellisario's. With thanks to delgaserasca for the fabulous beta.

Well, I took my chances, laid my
Heart open wide, I felt the rush,
I lost my head; I learned to laugh,
Oh, but then I learned to cry, I did.

--I Did; Trisha Yearwood

She makes her decision and steps onto the ferry with him; the longer she leaves this, the harder it'll be. It's now or never, Marine, she tells herself; she makes a comment that at any other time, would have earned her a definite red light. But they've moved past the traffic signals now (or at least, she thinks – hopes – they've moved past their insecurities).

That's it, it's done: she opened her heart and told him she was ready; screw the consequences: they're not even on the same damn continent (and he still can't let go; the adrenaline fades suddenly and the anticlimax almost throws her off her feet for a second. Get a damn grip, Marine.). She shrinks away; he tells her she should feel flattered, that he's only like this with her (but she doesn't feel flattered, she feels rejected by her own best friend; she wonders whether 'this' is insane, rejecting, 'not ready').

She laughs later, she cries; she cries for herself, for him, for his father and Luke and Jordan and everyone he's lost, for how he can't love because he can't bear to lose (again); she cries for Mic and how she knows she'll hurt him in the end, she cries until she can cry no more.
