I looked down at the human at my feet, my eyes tracking his every movement as he bowed in a crouching position. His head was lowered with his hair lekku slicked back with one hand on the ground and the other in his pocket. A smile played on his lips when he looked back up at me, a smile that I'd forgotten, it was so rare.

"Zim...I want you to be part of me and me a part of you. I wanna wake up beside you in mornings after we fight on your couch and just lay there as an apology. I want you to fight me and never surrender as long as we both live. I want to have space adventures forever while I chase you through those stars. I want to pick you up as you kick and scream that I'm filthy.

I want you to try and take over Earth. I want to try and stop you at every turn. I want to see who wins. I want to fight over cameras with you and have guns pointed at each other and Megadoomers blowing up in our faces. I want to have to rescue from your future self. I want you to embarrass me in front of the whole galaxy with one workout tape. I want to have a reason for having a workout tape.

I want to give up and I want to miss you. I want you to get depressed. I want to come back to you looking so happy and trying to liquefy my organs. I want you to purr while we insult each other. I want to be in a bubble while you drag me into a lab. I want to kiss you secretly through the bubble. I want to have so many pictures of you it labels me as a stalker. I need to be your rival, Zim."

He pulled a box out of his pocket to show to me.

"Dib-thing? Wh-why does my face-gah! D-Dib?!"

My claw was clasped in his hand.

"I need you to be in Skool so I don't get worried. I need to check my monitors to make sure you're okay. I need to save you when you're in danger, Zim. I wanna be you're rival forever. I wanna have you here forever."

He took a ring out of the box, slipping it onto my last claw. Pulling me in for a single, secret kiss...

"Di-Dib..."

"I want you to stay on Earth forever, Zim. I want to stay here, just stay like this. I want you to always have this promise ring. I want to be Earth's defender with my Invader Zim. I never want to go. I never want to leave for college. I want to be fifteen forever. I don't wanna leave. I promise you, Zim..."

With that, he dashed off. Leaving Zim with lots of questions and with a promise around my claw. But what exactly had the Dib promised?
