Perfection

(I never said you had to be perfect. AU BubbLee)

She stood in the doorway of the bedroom and watched as he stripped it of any trace of him. The only thing that broke the silence was the cluttering and shuffling of his belongings being thrown into bags.

She didn't try to stop him.

They were way past that.

He was simply putting the definitive punctuation to a conversation that ended a long time ago.

They never argued.

But maybe that was the problem.

They never argued about her closeness with Gumball, a classmate from med school who (incidentally) was her old high school flame. They never argued about Marceline, the vocalist in his band who he confessed on being attracted to. They never argued, not even on the night Marshall admitted to kissing Marceline and Bonni stayed at Gumball's for comfort.

They never argued.

But it was because Marshall would never admit to being jealous of Gumball and Bonni would never admit to disliking Marceline.

They didn't even argue on the night he finally said "I can't do this anymore. I can't compete with perfection," because all she said in reply was "I know the feeling."

She opened the door for him and watched him walk down the hall. When it seemed like he was too far to hear, she called out "I never said you had to be perfect."

He stopped and she wondered if he heard her.

She waited for him to turn around. But he didn't. He just continued to walk away. She would've wanted for him to say something.

But they were way past that.

And there's no point in starting a conversation that ended a long time ago.
