Nightmare

The piercing cold night wind invaded Shadow's room through the open window, stabbing him through the shield of his warm quilt. Shivering, Shadow awoke.

The wind continued its merciless attack, impaling him with cold gushes of air. It would take only a second to close the window and return to the warmth of his covers; yet, Shadow remained where he lay, shivering; however, the wind could claim no victory.

Shadow shivered from something far more chilling and insidious then the icy wind. Something that filled him with fear, anger, and sorrow. Something, he often felt his life to be: A nightmare.

"Maria." The name rolled off his lips and a harsh exasperated sigh followed. How long, he wondered, would she plague his thoughts; his dreams; his life? If only she would release him, for Shadow lacked the strength to do so himself.

He rose to a sitting position, exposing himself further to the cold air. Sleep would not greet him tonight. Shadow could no more sleep then he could cease thinking of her. Maria's face and her tragic fate would haunt his dreams forever.

A knock at Shadow's door, interrupted him, giving Shadow momentary relief from gloomy thoughts of Maria.

Again, a knock. Shadow did not answer, wishing to be left alone in his despair; but then, her voice called to him from behind the wooden door, filling his ears and heart. "Shadow can I come in," She asked sweetly.

Once more, he gave no answer; though, Shadow knew and desperately wanted to give it. Come in, come in please. That's what he wanted to say, but some unknown entity sealed his voice. And so, he said nothing.

Surely, she will leave, having received no answer and he would trudge through another sleepless night, alone. Then, to his surprise, the door creaked open and a shaded figure of pink entered Shadow's room.

"Shadow." She spoke his name once more; He felt his heart would burst form hearing it—burst from a feeling he had not experience in so long, that he'd forgotten its name; However, as the pink hedgehog walked closer, nearing his bedside, Shadow knew the feeling's name would not stay forgotten. The closer she drew, the stronger the feeling grew.

Then, when she stood beside his bedside, he met her large eyes. There was comfort in them—understanding and healing. Could she be his savior? Could she bring him solace?

To his delight, he felt her hand cover his own and Shadow knew the answer: Yes.

Amy Rose had heard his suffering even in the dead of night—even in the dark caverns of his dreams. She came to him, now, to comfort him, save him and… and… the word, the feeling… Love…yes, to love him.

"Shadow," her voice was soft and low. He could sense the intensity her next words would hold for him, so he leaned in closer to hear every word. She spoke.

" Can I use your bathroom? My toilet is clogged and Tails is in the hallway bathroom and Sonic won't let me into his room and believe me I tried to get in there and Chris, well, you know how he is and I'd tell you about everyone else, but I really really have to go. So what do you say?"

Shadow nodded slowly and Amy zoomed into his bathroom. He lay back into his pillow. After a few minutes, the sound of flushing, followed by Amy swinging the bathroom door open, filled the air. "Thanks Shadow. You won't believe the night I had trying to find a restroom. Oh well, a story for another night," she shouted needlessly. Amy, then, exited the room, slamming the door behind her.

As silence and darkness shrouded Shadows being, two thoughts haunted him: The first, he murmured under his breath: "Maria." The second made him cringe: Amy Rose didn't wash her hands after she flushed.
