A take on Kira (Death Note) 4

I step outside. The sun is setting, turning the sky glorious colours. Vicious scarlet, dangerous orange, catastrophic yellow. A slight breeze ruffles my hair. I close my eyes and breathe in. I am calm now. I did it. The world, its mine now. It's ours. Free of injustice and evil. For once, I can relax and actually feel good about myself, about what I've done. The air smells strongly of sea salt and blood. The twisted smell reassures me.

Were free.

Behind me, the police force step out and stand around me with hands in pockets. I keep my eyes closed, letting sanity seep back into my bones.

"We understand you now" Aizawa says gruffly. He clears his throat. "But I have to admit, it's a bit scary. You really are a psychopath"

I open my eyes and turn to them. They all freeze, afraid, but I'm already laughing at being called a psychopath. The others join in, realising I'm harmless. "Good one Aizawa!" I gasp in-between cackles. "See what I mean?" Aizawa says, "Listen to your laugh!"

I cackle on like a hyena. Everybody laughs, letting go of the past.

Eventually, the laughing stops, and there is silence. We watch as the sun goes down. The sky begins to darken.

It reminds me of the end of a battle, the start of something new. Something filled with peace.

"So what now, Light?" Matsuda asks. I chuckle. "I am Kira now. And, I guess we go home. We enjoy our lives and stop any evil from re occurring. We go and leap head first into any bright opportunity there is, because Life is too short for anything else"

Everyone smiles. "So it's YOLO, right?" Matsuda says. We all laugh in unison. "Yeah, I guess you could say that!"

"I never noticed before" Matsuda Says. "What's that?" I ask, curious. He looks at the floor, and then looks up into my mild eyes. "You're very inspirational, light- I mean, Kira. I think that even without the death note you would've changed the world"

I grin. It stretches across my face. Contagious, the guys each grin just as big. It's been a long time since I could grin like that. "Thanks Matsuda"

With that we all head towards the car. They all climb in. My body is half in, when I look up. "Kira, you coming?" Aizawa asks.

"Yeah just one sec. I need to look at something. Don't worry, I'm not planning to kill you, I'm through with that"

He laughs. "Don't be long"

I stroll up the hill, away from the car. The sky deepens still, creating shadows on the forest floor. Finally, I get to where I want to be.

High up on a cliff, I stand. The last of the lights slinks away and I'm plunged into utter darkness. A smile creeps up onto my face. I look down, out across at the city. This is the start of the new world.

I've won.
