Ginka Suama had lived in poverty her whole life.
She was in the same situation as most of the other kids on her apartment block; poor family, too many children. Her selfish mother wanted exactly a dozen kids, and kept having them, despite not being able to feed them, or clothe them, or even buy them toys. On top of that, she refused to get a job, or do housework, leaving Ginka's father to work three jobs, just to ensure that his children didn't starve. But nothing he earned was ever enough.
Ginka was sick, sick, sick of it all. She was sick of her mother refusing to help out with the many kids she'd chosen to have. She was sick of being bullied at school, because her clothes were falling apart, and her father couldn't afford to buy her a new uniform. She was sick of her sisters crying because they were hungry, and there was no food in the house, sick of her father working himself to death, sick of not knowing when the next meal was coming, sick of not knowing whether there would be a roof over her head next month...
She saw no way out. That was, until a mysterious white ferret approached her on the way home from school.
"The name's Kyubey," the creature began, "And I can grant you any wish at all. All you'd have to do in return in become a magical girl."
Though sceptical at first, Ginka decided that she'd give the creature a chance. After all, she had nothing left to lose. "Anything?" she asked.
"Of course," Kyubey confirmed, "You could wish for a giant cheesecake, or for someone you like to fall for you. And I guarantee I can make it happen. In exchange, you will become a magical girl, tasked with fighting witches."
Ginka pursed her lips. Witches? Fighting? Ginka had never fought anyone in her life, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to start now. "What are witches?"
Kyubey cocked his head at her. "Witches are...Fallen magical girls, let's say," he began, "They lost their minds, and became monsters, who kill innocent people. Ironically, only magical girls have the power to stop them."
And with that, Ginka was put almost instantly at ease. Ginka loved fairytales about heroes defeating monsters, when she was little. And the fact that she could become a hero, and get a wish of her choosing seemed like the perfect deal. "Alright then, Kyubey. Make me a magical girl."
Kyubey shook his head. "Tell me what your wish is, first."
She knew exactly what she wanted. The post office sold tickets for a lottery, and the grand prize was ten billion yen. Enough money, that her family would never, ever have to starve, or want for anything again...
"I want to win the lottery!"
That evening, Ginka bought a lottery ticket. And sure enough, she won the grand prize. It was amazing; her family was happy, for the first time in years. They bought a new house, Ginka's father quit his jobs, all of the kids in the family got new uniforms, new clothes, new schoolbooks...They got everything that they could ever need. And just to top it all off, Ginka was enjoying being a magical girl; she felt like a superhero, in her frilly blouse, and dark green hot pants, saving people all around the city, with the power of her twin pistols.
But then greed got the better of her family. They had everything, but it wasn't enough.
Ginka's youngest sister, Kaori, finally got the Licca-chan doll she'd always dreamed of. But soon, she grew bored with it, and demanded that Ginka buy her a new one. And then another one, and then another one. Her eldest brothers wanted designer clothes, fancy cologne, and even sports cars, and Ginka paid for them all, but soon, they'd demand something else. And then her mother demanded that she buy a new crib, and fancy baby clothes, because she wanted another child. And then her father, sick of her mother's selfishness, demanded money from his daughter, for reasons he wouldn't disclose to her. And soon, even people at school, who'd found out about Ginka's newfound wealth were begging her for money.
Ginka eventually stopped handing out money. She told everyone that the money was only to be used for things her family needed, from now on. And her family were outraged.
"But the new Licca-chan's coming out this weekend! My old one's got a tear in her dress! Won't you buy me another one, onee-chan?"
"How could you? This is your new baby brother we're talking about! Of course he needs the very best mobile for his crib!"
"But my girlfriend said that she'd leave me, if I didn't buy her more of that perfume!"
"Why won't you give it to me, Ginka-chan! WHY ARE YOU SO SELFISH?"
Selfish. Selfish selfish selfish selfish. That was all that Ginka's family called her anymore. She gave them everything they ever wanted. But nothing had ever been enough. Nothing was ever going to be enough. They were going to take, and take, and take, until she had nothing more left to give.
Ginka's soul gem winked out like a lightbulb on its last thread of tungsten one evening, as her family bombarded her with demands one last time. Her vision went blurry. Their lavish house turned into a bakery, filled with obese children, eating all of the beautiful cakes on the stands...
"I gave you everything. Why...Wasn't it ever enough? Why don't you appreciate anything I've done for you?!"
Antoinette, the baker witch, with a giving nature. This witch is constantly baking beautiful things, to give to her familiars, but they are never, ever grateful for any of it. They take them, and they eat them all up, but they're never enough, and they're constantly demanding more. In the hopes of satisfying their demands, the witch expends all of her power, just for her ungrateful minions.
Minions:
Henry
He resembles an obese child, feasting on cake. If one gets too close to him, he will eat them as well.
Duty: To appreciate Antoinette's cooking. He never does, though.
Barbara
A small, shadowy witch, who resembles a little girl, surrounded by broken dolls. She guilts her mistress into baking more for her, by crying until she does.
Duty: To play with her many dolls.
