What we must do

Violet felt his fingernails scratch against her skin and tried to keep her composure while his eyes bored into hers as he explained in his deadly whisper that she was going to be in the play, she was going to play the part of his bride and that there would be no arguing that point. Violet shivered at the contact of his fingers. There was a nagging doubt at the back of her mind as Olaf finally let go, that there might be an ulterior motive for her particular role in The Marvelous Marriage.

The next morning when Klaus told her why exactly she was playing the role of the bride in the Marvelous Marriage Violet felt physically sick, she was too young to get married, not to mention the fact that she highly doubted she would survive long after Olaf had procured the fortune.

Now as she gazed up to the tower and saw the hopeless form of her sister bound and gagged in a bird cage Violet remembered the promise she had made to her parents, that she would always look out for her siblings and keep them safe. She felt as she looked up at her sister that she had failed in her promise.

Violet heard as if from far away Olaf's speech about a stubborn mule and a stick and then the question she had been dreading

"Will you marry me?"

She was brought back to reality , again by his hand, but this time it was stroking her hair making her want to flinch and turn away in disgust . It was only the thought of what he would do to Sunny that kept her rooted to the spot. He was promising her that she would not die if she agreed, but live with him as his wife. His wife, Violet froze inside as she imagined how her life would be, terrorised by Olaf and his friends, being at their beck and call and having to call Husband the man who killed her family. However as Violet gazed up towards her sister she knew that she had no choice. Violet loathed Count Olaf for what he was making her do but in the end she loved her sister more.
