Hey everybody! This is a one-shot about Jessica and Jonathan about 80 years after the Midnighters series ends. Hope you all like it!
Jonathan lay awake in his bed. He was old and frail, and he knew this was his last night. He had lived a long and full life. He finally made peace with Rex when Rex asked him to be the best man in his wedding. (As you may have guessed, Rex married Melissa.) He had been the god-father of Andrew and Kayla Greene.
Now, Rex and Melissa were dead. Andrew and Kayla were in their 60's and had grandchildren of their own.
Jonathan had married as well. Not to Jessica though. Jessica had dissappeared in the secret hour one night, never to be seen again. Jonathan was devestated. To this day he still loved her, but he had moved on. He had married Dess, who was there to comfort him when Jessica dissappeared. Dess had died six months ago while trying to fight a Darkling. She had been to old, no matter how young the secret hour made her feel.
Jonathan and Dess's children Alexa, Katie and Justin, were in their late 50's. Alexa and Katie, twins, were turning 60 soon. It was too bad that Jonathan wouldn't be around for that.
Jonathan looked at his clock. Midnight was just 10 minutes away. He would live through this midnight, then he would go peacefully. The clocked ticked, 10 minutes passed. Then, time stopped. Jonathan closed his eyes to listen to the pure silence. But there was noise. He opened his eyes. A girl sat at the edge of his bed.
It was Jessica.
She looked different than she had last time he had seen her. Being as she only lived for one hour a day, she was still very young. Definately older than when he last saw her, but far younger than his youngest granddaughter.
"Hi," she whispered.
"Jessica," he said.
"Yes, it's me Jonathan," she said.
Jonathan's mind flooded with questions. "Where did you go all those years ago? Why did you have to leave?" he finally managed.
"I've been watching you. From far away. I didn't want to make you suffer like I did. It wasn't fair to you. That is why I had to go," she responded in her same, calm voice.
"But you come now. Why?" he asked.
"You know why. How about we go flying one last time. Just like in our youth," she suggested.
"I... I can't. I can't fly like I used to. I'm far to old," he said.
She looked dissappointed. Then, finally after a few moments of empty silence, she said:
"Do you know how hard it is to watch everyone I know age away and die? My family, my friends, you. I never stopped loving you Jonathan. But you moved on, as I hoped you would," she said.
"What time is it?" Jonathan asked suddently.
Jessica looked at her watch. "It's 12:30," she said.
"I'll take you flying. One last time," he said.
She nodded. She took Jonathan's hand and felt the weightlessness that she so much missed. 'One last time' echoed through her mind. Both her and Jonathan knew what exactly "one last time" meant. This is why she came to visit him. She could sense his death coming as she had her other Midnighter friends.
They jumped from Jonathan's window and flew. Jessica recgonized parts of Bixby, but other areas have changed drastically.
Jonathan's grip tightened around Jessica's hand. Last time they had been like this had been the night where Jessica realised how much pain she was putting Jonathan through.
Far too soon, Midnight was almost over. Jonathan flew back into his room and lay on his bed. A single minute before the end of Midnight, Jonathan died. Silently, he slipped out of the world. Jessica, having still a minute in the world, kissed him on the cheek and whispered her final goodbye before dissappearing with the Secret Hour.
So, what did you all think? I think that this is one of my bests. Please, review! Flames will most likely be ignored. Thank you for reading!
Till next time,
~Ellie
