Chapter One: The best (or worst) birthday ever

(Schnee Mansion)

This day is a very special day. The day was Weiss Schnee's seventeenth birthday. That meant two things. The first was that she'd finally get to forge a contract with and obtain her very own devil-arm, a demon capable of transforming into a weapon. The second was that she'd finally get confirmation if she made it into Beacon Academy. But first, she had a contract to forge.

(Unknown dark space)

Darkness and nothingness filled the space. The only spots of color was Weiss and a large red rosebud. A voice came from the rosebud, speaking directly to Weiss.

"Can I assume that you're here to forge a contract with me?" said the voice from the rosebud. "Tell me your name and your reason why you want to forge a contract."

"My name is Weiss Schnee. And I want to forge a contract because of my family's legacy." answered Weiss.

"I asked for YOUR reason. NOT your FAMILY's!" yelled the voice in the rosebud. "WHAT! IS! YOUR! REASON!?"

"I want… a chance to make a difference. I want… freedom." said a slightly scared Weiss.

"Your freedom stems from betrayal." said the voice in a satisfied tone. "Now let us forge a contract. Break thy chains of captivity and spread thy wings of rebellion! Seal this contract! Complete the spell! Speak my name!"

(A large room in the Schnee Mansion)

"Come forth. RUBY!" yelled Weiss as she completed the spell. As the smoke produced by the spell clears, at the center of the summoningcircle, the figure of a girl, slightly younger than Weiss, is revealed. She greets Weiss with a smile.

"I look forward to be working with you, Mistress." says the girl.

"I can say the same thing, Ruby." says a smiling Weiss in response.

"WEISS SCHNEE! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!" shouts a very angry male voice who just entered the room. "I FORBID YOU FROM LEAVING ATLAS! AND YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT ENTERING BEACON AS WELL!"

"Awkward…" said Ruby before transforming into a Multi Action Dust Rapier (Weiss' canon weapon) in a small explosion of rose petals.

'I can work with this.' thought Weiss as she inspected Ruby in weapon-form.

'If you don't like it or feel awkward using this, I can always become another kind of weapon if you want.' Ruby responded to Weiss' thought telepathically. 'I probably should have told you that you, as my contractholder, shares a telepathic link with me earlier? Oops.'

"WEISS! YOUR ROOM! NOW!" shouts Weiss' father.

(Weiss' room. Sometime later)

Weiss was sitting on her bed, feeling depressed. But she suddenly gets an idea.

"Hey! Ruby." says Weiss.

"Yes?" says Ruby in response.

"What was it you said about freedom?" Weiss asks.

"Your freedom stems from betrayal. Break thy chains of captivity and spread thy wings of rebellion."

"What did you mean by that?"

"Betray your father's wishes. Break the bond that chain you down to this cage and spread your wings of rebellion. Run away!" answered Ruby with confidence.

"You're right! This place hasn't been my home. It's been my prison. But how are we going to leave?" said Weiss.

"How long can you maintain a summon?" asks Ruby.

"What are suggesting exactly?" asks Weiss in a skeptical tone.

"Got a Nevermore among your summons?"

"Yes… why do you ask?"

"How long do you think you could maintain one big enough to carry you?" asks Ruby.

"If I'd have to guess… about two hours straight. Oh! Now I see what you're getting at." said Weiss. "Hold on. Flying on a summoned Nevermore from here to Vale? Non stop? Are you crazy!?"

"Got a better idea?" asked Ruby, already knowing the answer.

"No…" said Weiss in defeat. "Even if it sound dangerous and downright insane… it does sound to a certain extent, kind of fun."

"Okay. Pack your things. We're leaving at midnight." said Ruby.

"Right! Let's go!"
