Manly Ways
By
Norikio Na No Da
John didn't like to snuggle. Neither did Fin, in fact.
Their manly pride forbade them from being physically intimate—aside from the obvious intimacy that sex entailed, of course. It had been weeks before they had silently agreed to share a bed; before that, they had been accustomed to the "host" sleeping in bed and the "guest" sleeping on the couch, depending on whose apartment they were at. Still, even though they had eventually resolved to sleep in the same bed after sex, they always lay separate from each other, usually facing away, a yawning gap between them. And in the morning, they found themselves entangled in each other's arms.
The first time this happened, Fin had woken first and yelped in surprise—John, startled awake, had kneed him so hard in the groin that Fin had fallen right out of bed. They fumed and refused to speak to each other for the rest of the day, but by nightfall they were both apologetic. In their awkward, grudging, manly way.
Eventually they had accepted the likelihood of waking up in each other's embrace in the mornings as inevitable. They weren't happy about it—or if they were, it was only the slightest bit, and they tried very hard not to show it. They would just open their eyes, grumble, and roll away. Or, if only one woke at a time, he would curl a little closer, shut his eyes and pretend it had never happened. It was warmer that way, after all. Drafts in New York were killer. And there's no sense in giving yourself the chills over something stupid like pride.
If there was anything else to this reasoning, they never mentioned it. But then, maybe it was just one of those things that didn't need to go mentioned between men and their manly ways.
