With a smile, it begins, and May feels a flutter in her chest, warm and comforting and foreign because she's eleven and it's all a new concept to her.
His eyes are a startling green, like the color of her favorite plants, or his treecko as it leaps into battle. She feels her breath catch in her throat for an instant, and in that fleeting moment, his lips curl upward in a kind, almost cherubic smile, like he doesn't know what he's doing to her, how he's making her heart pound in her chest.
It begins with a smile, and May knows he has his hooks in her but she doesn't care.
The funny thing is, hooks can hurt.

They are twelve when he leaves on his journey.
She tries to hide her tears as his figure grows distant on the horizon, his treecko a mere speck against the sunset.
He had hugged her before he left, told her that she was his best friend, but that made her even more sad because why couldn't he see how she feels about him?

She is thirteen when he defeats Steven and becomes the new Hoenn champion.
She watches him on her old television, grinning triumphantly as his sceptile sends bullet seeds into the air. His grin is so different from his innocent smile-it is hard, devilish, and-dare she say it-egoistic.
His eyes met the camera, and it was almost like he was staring right at her, those shocking green eyes looking deep within her and observing the feelings hidden there. May's eyes fill with tears, and she can feel a yearning, a longing to see his face again, to feel his hand on her hip pushing her behind him when he battles.
She looks down at the torchic in her lap, and she feels the hooks again, piercing deeply in her heart.
She gets an idea.

She is fifteen when she meets him again.
Her blaziken's arms are aflame, and his amber eyes are hungry for battle. He looks up as she comes through the doors, and his green eyes widen in shock.
"May?" he questions, and you smile, happy to see him again, those green eyes glimmering…
"What are you doing here?" he asks, and he doesn't sound happy to see her and she's confused because he hasn't come home for three years and why wouldn't he be happy to see his best friend?
"I came to see you," May says quietly, and adds, "I missed you."
He appraises her for a moment. "You battled through the entire Elite Four just to see me?"
"Yes," she says, as if he had asked her something mundane, such as if she had gotten new running shoes.
"Why?"
May swallows hard, steels her courage. She takes a step forward because she wants him to see the yearning, the longing.
"I…Because I like you. I've liked you for four years now."
He stops for a moment, those green eyes peering into her own, searching, and, for a moment, she dares to hope he reciprocates her feelings.
Then he smiles. It is nothing like the smiles of their childhood, warm and innocent. This smile is shy and aloof. Apologetic.
"May, I…I'm sorry, but I only ever thought of you as a friend."
The hooks tear and scrape and rip at her heart, and all she can do is stand there, looking into those mesmerizing eyes. Eyes that she never wants to look into again because it just hurts too much.
He begins to speak again, but she turns away and strides for the doors because she can't stay here, not now. Her blaziken follows quietly after casting a bemused glance at the boy.
"May, wait!" But she's gone. He peers into the sky and sees a mere speck of a swallow racing away on the wind.
