"Why do you seem so sad? I thought you'd be happy."
Katara sighed. "I am happy Aang. It's just… I was hoping she'd be an air bender." She didn't turn around to face her husband as she answered him.
Earlier in the day, their daughter Kya had just showed her first signs of water bending. Aang was ecstatic when it happened and picked her up and spun her around. Katara on the other hand, stood silent.
"Aren't you happy mommy?" Kya asked excitedly.
Hoping that her daughter wouldn't notice the slightest sadness behind her smile, she replied "I'm so happy sweetie." But Aang noticed. He kept quiet until now, when he found his wife sitting quietly in the windowsill watching the sunset.
"Katara." Aang whispered as he sat down next to her. "I don't want you to worry about this. Nature has a way of working things out."
Katara frowned and turned her head to look at him. "But what if nature doesn't fix things. It'll be all my fault that there are no more air benders in the world. It's my responsibility to produce another air bender."
"Katara," Aang half laughed. "It's not your job to reproduce anything but the children we create out of love. If none of them turn out to be air benders, then that's just how it's meant to be."
"But how can you say that?" Katara asked frowning. "Don't you want there to be more air benders?"
Aang sighed wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Of course I do. But I don't want this to be something you have to stress over. We have time Katara. We'll have more kids. Bumi is only three years old. He might be a bender too."
"Aang, I can already sense that he's not a bender and you know that."
"Well then maybe this one will be an air bender." He replied as he placed a hand on her swollen abdomen.
Katara smiled as she watched his hand move over her large stomach. She placed a hand on top of his.
"I hope so." She whispered. "Don't get me wrong Aang. I'm so proud that Kya is a water bender. And I love Bumi so much. It doesn't matter that he's not a bender, but… I just feel like I owe this to the world."
"Katara, you don't owe anything to the world. I love you and all our children no matter what they can or can't bend. You're an amazing mother and a wonderful wife. I love you so much, no matter what. And I don't want you to ever forget that."
Katara smiled and finally leaned into his embrace. "I love you, you know that?" She whispered.
Aang smiled and responded by placing a soft kiss on her head. Then resting his forehead there, he said "Let's get some rest. You've had a long day."
"Ok, I'll be in bed in a minuet." She said as Aang rose from his seat beside her and stretched his arms above his head.
"Ok, see you in a minuet." He yawned as he walked off.
Katara watched him leave. After a minuet, she looked down at her round stomach and placed her hands there.
Moving her hands over her stomach, she whispered, "Please, please please, be an air bender."
I honestly have no idea where this came from. It sort of just vomited out of my brain.
