"Happy Birthday!"

Lily turned around from her book to glance at the raven-haired boy beside her. He was grinning, his glasses hanging slightly crooked on his nose.

"Hi," She muttered and went back to her book. Lily was celebrating her 17th birthday by reading alone in the common room. She had a free period just before lunch, but unfortunately, James had a free period too.

"Is this what you witches normally do on your birthday? Sit around and read-" he turned his head to read the cover "- Pride and Prejudice, alone in the common room?"

Lily ignored him.

"Look, I got you a present." He held out his hand, and in it was a tiny silver package. Lily opened it to find a heart-shaped gold necklace in it.

Lily fingered the clasp, and the heart glowed blue.

"It changes colour according to your mood."

"Aren't they highly inaccurate?"

"Not this one." He leaned forward and took the necklace from her. Carefully, he tied it round her neck, his fingers brushing back her hair gently. Now the heart glowed pink.

"There." James sat back proudly.

"How will I know what it means?"

"You won't."
