Wade sighed as he walked out of his girlfriend Hilary's bedroom. She'd been feeling poorly the last few days and he'd been doing everything he could to take care of her. They'd met while on vacation with mutual friends and he had been instantly taken with her. Now, nearly two years later, he couldn't imagine his life without her in it. He stared at the ring one more time as he walked into the living room to let her sleep. He'd been thinking about asking her to be his wife for the last few months. Since they'd come back from their two weeks in England. He laid his head back on the couch and closed his eyes as he pictured it in his mind, her walking down the aisle toward him in a beautiful dress. The small and intimate ceremony attended by only their closest friends and family. He must have drifted off to sleep because he woke up a few hours later to soft lips kissing him on the forehead and smiled when he saw that Hilary was awake.
"Sorry love, I guess I drifted off to sleep." He said, his voice still full of sleep. She smiled and sat down next to him, her head resting on his chest.
"It's alright. You've been working long hours at the office and then coming home and taking care of me. You deserve to rest when you need to." She said. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on top of the head.
"There's nothing I wouldn't do for you love." He felt her smile against his chest. "You mean everything to me."
"Good. Because there's something I need to tell you." She said as she pulled away to look at him. "I went to the doctor today while you were at work. Olive came over and went with me. I know what's wrong with me." A million thoughts ran through his mind, each the worst case scenario as to what might be ailing the woman that he loved. He'd be there for her, no matter what it was. She handed him the envelope and he turned and looked at her and opened it. He looked at the picture inside and then back up at her as it settled in that she didn't have some kind of illness that was going to take her away from him. That she was in fact, having their baby and it would only bring them closer together. "I'm due in September." She said trying to gage his reaction. He turned after a while and smiled at her, his blue eyes beaming as he looked at her and ran his hand over her face gently before he leaned in and kissed her. His mind was made up now. He wanted to marry her more than anything else in the world and be there for everything life with her and their child would throw at him. He slipped the ring out of his pocket and held it out to her.
"I've been carrying this around for months now. Since we got back from England as a matter of fact. And I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that, I want to be with you, with both of you forever. Would you….would you marry me?" She smiled and nodded and he slipped the ring on her finger and leaned in and kissed her softly. Happier than he had been in a long time.
