PROLOGUE
Apollo stared at the stormy sky as he knocked on her door. The peeling paint and graffiti faded into the background when she opened up the door. She was stunning, even after all the pain and grief he gave her. Her fragile and pale body collapsed into his strong arms. She leaned on him, like she was too broken to hold herself together.
"I hate you, I hate you so much." She tore herself off of him. He sat down. "Where have you been all these years? How convenient of you to show up whenever you feel like it."
He flinched. Each word was an arrow aimed at his gut. Her words hurt him more than Zeus's lightning bolts.
"Marina, please, let me explain! If he knew I was here right now, he would have me trapped in Olympus for the next century. I'm banned from ever entering the mortal world. I won't be able to see you again and I just want you to know that-"
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
Tears overflowed from her eyes.
He wanted to wrap her in his arms, and dry her eyes with his sleeves, like they used to. He wanted to run his hands through her hair and kiss her tears away. He wanted to kiss her until she forgot about all her pain and troubles, and until he forgot his name. He wanted to taste her cherry chapstick again. He wanted to piece together all her broken pieces and bury his face in her jasmine scented hair. He wanted to be with her everyday, like two mortals madly in love. He didn't want to be a God if he couldn't be without her.
But he was, and there was nothing he could do change that.
His heart belonged to her, but his body remained frozen on the chair.
"I just want you to know that I - "
I love you. I never want to leave you. I want to hold you in my arms and never let go.
"I am here to give you this."
He handed her a small metal package, the size of a tissue box. It had a sun shaped clasp and a note taped on the outside.
Marina, my love,
Times are rough in Olympus, and I apologize that I left so suddenly. I am forbidden from ever seeing you. Ever since the news of the prophecy reached his ears, he has chained me in Olympus. I want you to know that I love you. I love you more than hot summer days. Your voice fills me with joy and your laughter is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Please don't stop smiling. Please stay strong. I won't be able to see you again for a while, but I want you to know that you have my heart. You stole it the moment we met five years ago. You can play with it. You can break it. You can go find a man who will treat you well and stay with you. You can do whatever you want, but I want you to know that you will always have a part of me. Don't worry about the storm. I've worked hard to make sure Zeus does not know about us.
Love,
Apollo
Then, she opened the lid, and a sheet of paper fluttered out.
Three half-bloods of sun, moon, and fire
Will destroy the cheater and kill the liar
With the bolt and the trident in their hand
Blood and storm will replace all land
Allies will fall to a false friend's curse
Loyalties will die in the hypnotic verse
As the world of death explodes into dust
The Gods of Olympus will fade into rust
When she looked up, Apollo was already gone. The only proof of his visit was the box and her tears.
