Inevitable Longing
Summary: It'd been years. Long, unforgiving years since Light's death. But to Misa, these years felt like centuries.
Misa plopped down on her bed after tossing her heels at the mirror. Surprisingly there were no cracks or broken glass scattered on the imported carpets. She lay, body splayed across the mattress, eyes glazed with unshed tears.
It was January 28 again.
It had been so many years since his death, she was 57 and counting. She looked 37. Married to Kyousuke Ryuuga, Hideki Ryuuga's younger brother. The press was all over their wedding, it was being watched even in the UK that day. So she'd married rich, had fame, had fortune, had few scandals on prescription drug overdoses that had never been confirmed as suicide attempts or just accidental OD's (they mostly occurred in late January, the press mentioned). But other than that, to the untrained eye Misa's life was the perfect dream any girl, teen, or woman would wish for. It wasn't quite the case.
Her heart wrenched at the remorse and contrite squeezing and clutching at it.
He- Light had told her once during one of their hundreds of dates that if they had met under different circumstances, things might have turned out differently. But that wasn't the situation here. Light was dead and she had no one to blame. Except herself.
She couldn't help herself from thinking of how many ways she could have prevented his death.
In another life, she'd still be his Queen. They'd keep all their promises. The "us against the world".
She shook her head. She should just stop thinking of him. Kyousuke was as close to the gentleman-like, clever, smart, considerate man she'd hoped to be with as it could get. Kyousuke had auburn hair, the soft brown eyes, and the height of a European male model. He was a quiet, mysterious man. He worked in the video game business under "Sony", leaving them with a large room labeled the media room in the name of video game research. He spent money on her, he brought home gifts, he truly loved her. He wasn't Light. But he was close enough.
"Misa? Are you home?" a voice was heard from downstairs.
"Yes." the woman replied shakily, but loud enough for the man downstairs to hear.
Misa wiped her damp face with her sleeve, stood up and looked over her face in the mirror, and tried to clear her face up a bit. A figure appeared in the doorway and she turned to face him.
"Misa... ? I'm surprised you didn't... "
"Didn't what? Try to kill myself?" Misa replied, poison embedded in her voice.
"Misa that's not what I- " Kyousuke tried to reply. But he was abruptly cut off by Misa.
"I'm sorry, Kyou-kun. I just... "
Kyousuke put on a warm smile, "I know, Misa. Its okay. Everything gets better with time, I promise." He told her, "I'm going to order food, I'll be back soon, darling."
Kyousuke turned and left the room quietly. Misa wiped her face once more. She wondered how much time it'd take for things to get better. It's already been years, she thought. Misa sat on the bed once more before falling backwards, landing on her bed, face-up.
She undoubtedly missed Light. No matter how deceitful he was and although she knew that he'd been using her all along, she knew she still loved him. And she knew time wouldn't heal these wounds.
