Another fortune acquired, another enemy made. No matter the care she took in covering her tracks, they were finding her, and more quickly than usual. She was far from the early years of her escapades, when a beautiful, young girl was the last one anyone would suspect. She had become successful and, while greed honed her natural skills with gems, it also emboldened her.
Now, as another would-be bounty hunter fell and the crack of the bullet faded into the late London fog, she realized that her boldness was now a vulnerability. And vulnerability was deadly in her trade. Tucking her pistol methodically back into the folds of her dress, she glanced toward the door of the brick building which had hidden her so commendably. The loud scoffing and jeering at some man's preposterous theory drew her closer.
Her curiosity pricked, and her baser instincts knowing she should stay out of sight for the moment, she eased her way through the doors and neared the end of the hall just in time to hear "fairy tale expedition" and "funding." Two phrases that intrigued her all the more. Her last endeavor had deepened her pockets more than usual, thus accounting for the urgency with which her former attacker had been dispatched. Here was a chance for her tracks to cool and a new woman to emerge. Possibly a wealthier one, if the claims were true about a so-called Lost World.
Without thinking twice, she announced her new self and her intentions. She then turned and walked away, leaving the room just as she liked it: speechless. A small satisfied smile crept over her exotic features. 'Yes, Marguerite Krux, you will do very well,' she thought as she disappeared into the fog.
