and then the crown prince rode the dragon to save the princess, and they all lived happily ever after.
asami listens to her mother's melodic voice with wide, starry eyes.
why does the prince have to do the rescuing?
her mother smooths her hair back with shaking hands and tells her that she can do anything, too.
{they both know that she's living a lie}
the pages of the book are curling upwards, the soot leaving her hands and heart blackened and dying.
she picks through the burning rubble and rotting carcasses and tries to build a life out of what was once there.
daddy watches on with cold, hardened eyes and she realizes that this is the beginning of the end.
{she is all she has left}
smoky eye shadows and satomobiles do nothing to hide the hole in her soul.
she disappears deeper and deeper into the mansion, where she can't hear her daddy's loud footsteps try to smother the deafening silence.
and when she looks into the mirror, all she can see is an outline of a stranger.
{a stranger who could have been great, but isn't}
she has mako (and korra and bolin) and she can finally finish that puzzle she started all those years ago.
she feels warm and safe and happy and there is a lantern illuminated within her which flickered out with the firebender who destroyed her life (what an ironic twist).
{but puzzles aren't permanent, and mako made a wrong move}
now she has makoandkorra, and bolin. but bolin is shattering into bowl after bowl of water tribe noodles.
you can't follow him, they say. it's not what hiroshi would have wanted for you.
{his ghost still shapes her}
so she rebuilds her entire empire by recycling scraps and repairing broken chandeliers until finally, finally, she succeeds.
she is asami sato, and only asami sato (no mommy or daddy or mako).
{she is the prince of her own fairytale, and free to wallow in all the self pity she damn well pleases}
[a/n] i should make a series or something. i'll probably do bolin next (mako and korra are already done, so check them out :)
but yeah. asami. she's cool. and dying on the inside.
kat ❤
