Keeping Secrets
Diane Lockhart was good at keeping secrets, many people would not think this about her though. Of course, everyone had their secret, but for Diane, hers were far more than impossible dreams or fetishes. And she knew the moment she fell in love, it would be difficult to keep them from Kurt. It had been on her mind for weeks now, running through her head the, things she has done, she has sacrificed, just to be on top. And she was on top. Diane is not ashamed, yet she knew she would never be able to speak about her secrets.
It was an ordinary evening, Kurt was in Chicago and they planned to have dinner at his hotel as they usually do when he is in town, but now the secrets finally got to her. She could not ignore them much longer. She drank more wine and continued talking to Kurt, blocking them away, but the thing with secrets it they never go away. They continue to stare you in the face, never letting you break eye contact with them.
Kurt was discussing his new case, a woman who was murdered and he suspected the husband of killing her. He could see there was something wrong with his date: Diane's eyes wondered away from him, she was trying to break contact with the secrets. He paused for a moment, "Diane?"
"Yes?" She looked back to him and took another sip of wine.
"We can talk about something else if you're bored. I know my job isn't always interesting." He smiled, understanding her, or at least he thought he did.
"No, no…it's not that." Diane shook her head, "I have something else on my mind for a while."
"You can tell me." He sat back in his seat, ready to listen. Diane smiled, she loved him because of this, this moment right now. She took a deep breath and thought for a moment, how to start, where to begin. She had to tell him, she had to face the secrets of her past. It was only fair for him to know and in time, he would most likely have accepted these and moved on. Diane opened her mouth, ready to start, but then closed it again. She had only assumed he would accept these secrets because she loved him, but these secrets could also show how little he really knows her, how he really does not love her. Diane was not ready for that. She wanted to be with him, so she opened her mouth again and did the right thing.
"I can't get my mind off of it." She smiled, and then frowned. Diane paused, "How did Sarah Palin ever get a TV show?" Kurt laughed and shook his head. Diane Lockhart was maybe too good at keeping secrets.
