My Personal Magnet

Chapter 1

Jayden's POV

It was my last day in Los Angeles. I would miss the sun, sand and surf, but I don't want mom to get angry if I tried to resist the moving. We were moving to the La Push Quileute reservation in Washington; it was under a constant cover of clouds just south of Forks, Washington. If my dad hadn't died, mom wouldn't want to move there, but he did die and my mom had planned to forget about him by living in the thick of her roots.

My mom is a daughter of a Quileute. The legends say that we descended from wolves and that they're still our brothers today. I hadn't told my mom yet, but my wolf self had awakened. I almost never used it though; I had no wolf brothers around to have pack duties with.

My mom drove this moving truck well considering how small her car was. I sat in the trailer in the back of it on my beanbag chair. I was reading my Calvin and Hobbes book. My mom honked her horn three times; that was her signal to me that we were here. I put a bookmark in my book and hopped out of the trailer.

"This is weird," mom said; surprise colored her tone.

"What's weird about sun mom?"

"That there's sun here."

I blinked rapidly. "I guess it's rare for sun to be here then."

"Yes, it's very rare for there to be sun here."

"So this is where we'll be living?"

"Yes Jayden, we'll be living here for quite a while. The reservation is quite nice once you get used to it."

"So far mom, I'll just have to take your word for it." She rolled her eyes at me and we began to take our stuff into the house.

We brought stuff in, in silence for a little while. There was a question burning in my mind, so I figured I'd ask it now. "Hey mom," I began carefully.

"What is it Jayden," mom said nonchalantly.

"I was just wondering; are there any… wolves around this area?"

"You mean actual wolves, or are you referring to those stories I told you when you were young."

"Er, both."

"About the actual wolves, no, there are a couple of bears though, so be careful. About the wolves from the stories, they don't exist; it's just an old legend."

"Okay, I was just wondering."

"Well stop wondering and help me unpack."

It was my turn to roll my eyes. Mom always wanted to get tasks done as quickly as possible. She preferred relaxing to vacuuming.

I continued to unpack things into my new room when I heard a howl in the distance. That was weird; mom said that there were no wolves in the area. This bears investigation, I thought.

"Mom I'm going out," I shouted as I ran out the door.

"Be back by dinner time," mom shouted back at me. She sounded like a typical mom. By golly I bet she's been reading those parenting books again.

Once I got to a place where no one could see me, I shuffled off my clothes and attached them to the leather cord on my ankle. I phased into my wolf form and began to run toward the place where the howl came from.

I got to the spot where that strange howl came from. When I got to the spot I saw a sight that I never thought I'd ever see.

To be continued…
