The long day is over- Norah Jones

Feeling tired By the fire The long day is over

The wind is gone Asleep at dawn The embers burn on

With no reprise The sun will rise The long day is over

It fills like I've waited a lifetime for this. Just to sit by the fire with him.

The night draws in around us, wind blowing its hardest, shaking the windows and rattling the gates. We sit together, Jack and I, on the sofa, the firelight dancing over our faces and filling us with warmth that not even the howling wind outside can take away.

When this all started, when I first met Jack, I didn't know my feelings would ever become this strong, I was attracted to him the moment I walked in that door, but I assumed it would pass. I didn't know that I would get to the point when I couldn't live without him.

That was so long ago. We've grown up so much since then. Changed. Now we're older, and we start looking to want we want from life. Saving the world is nice, and a job that somebody has to do, but that somebody can't be me anymore. Nor him. We've done our fair share of staring death in the face for one lifetime. It's on somebody else's shoulders now.

General Hammond retired a while ago, and though it was difficult to adjust to a new leader, we managed it. But the time came, as we knew it would, when we couldn't take orders anymore, we couldn't be those famous soldiers, SG1! We just needed to be Jack, Sam, Teal'c and Daniel. We all agreed; it was time to call it a day.

Teal'c left and went to the new Jaffa settlement, with his kid. They're happy there, and come and visit from time to time. Daniel and Janet tied the not, and she's expecting their first baby any day now. As for Jack and I, well, we're happy just to sit in a draughty little cabin with a roaring fire, a couch and each other.

The night rushes past, the fire heats my skin and somehow makes my eyelids heavy. I let out a soft yawn and admit defeat. Bedtime.

He cocoons me in his arms as we lay in bed, the same way he does every night, but its so much more 'snug' when there's a storm just outside the window and you know your safe, wrapped in the arms of someone you love.

I fall asleep as the dawn light eats at the horizon, pushing away the night and its storm and banishing them to the shadows of somewhere far gone. The winds fall silent, gone or just burned out; leaving beaten trees as the only evidence they ever existed. Just as last nights embers glow a faint orange as they slowly fade in to ash.

The sun rises, slowly but surely, and I have no intention of ever leaving his arms. Its was a long day; took a long time to get here, but now I am, I'm never going back. I turn to look at him and smile. I could do this forever. I will do this forever.

The long day is over.

And a new one is on the horizon, just waiting to be had.

THE END
