Chapter One

It was late fall night up in a small town up in Franklin County, Maine, in the middle of the woods, by a lake, was a my families cabin.

It was raining out and mama and papa had gone out to get some oil for the lanterns. They told me and my older sister Jennifer, that they would be back but supper but they haven't returned.

"Jennifer, what has happened to mama and papa? Why haven't they returned home from in town? I'm so worried about them!" I tunged on my sister of the age of 16, yellow and blue checkered dress.

I had tears forming in my eyes as she looked down at me, from looking out the window, looking for papa and mama. Jennifer smiled at me, pulled me in close and hugged me into a tight embrace.

"Everything is going to be fine Genevieve! Mama and papa should be there anytime soon. They should be turning the corner with Jade and Star anytime now!"

Jade and Star are our horses. Jade is a pile tanish, brownish mare, with white patches on her legs, snout and her buttom and Star is a all black stallion, with a small white star shape on the center of it forehead and oddly a white tail.

"I hope that you are right Jennifer." I helded onto her tightly for what it seemed like forever, when we saw a horse come running around the corner but it wasn't Star or Jade.

Jennifer brought me over to the couch, sat me down and told me to stay right there, as she went to the front door. She walked out onto the porch and met the man on the horse.

We both knew the man. It was our Uncle Thomas, who owns the store in town. He was soaking wet from the rain.

"Uncle Thomas, what has happened? Where is mama and papa?" Jennifer helped our uncle to the fireplace, to warm up.

Uncle Thomas staired into the fire and didn't answer my sister. I got up off of the couch, walked over to the fireplace and hugged my uncle.

"Uncle please tell us, we can take it." I looked up at my uncle, with tears rolling down my cheeks.

Uncle Thomas hugged me back, got down on his knees, looked me into eyes and said the words Jennifer and I never wanted to hear.

"Jennifer, Genevieve, your mother and father are dead. The carriage fell down the hill, do to the road being washed out cause of rain. I'm so sorry girls!"
