Butterfly

You are always so happy

In a truly contagious way

It infects me and always has

You're the sight of a butterfly on a sunny day

A glorious flutter of wings

Alighting from flower to flower

Seeming to know nothing but the joy

Of the sweet nectar you both imbibe and exude

But in truth the plight of a butterfly

Is a woefully underappreciated truth

A butterfly is the end product

Of the hatching of hundreds of worms

Of which only dozens will survive

Who will find the best food? Who will avoid the bird?

Who will wrap themselves in their warm cocoon

And complete their metamorphosis undisturbed

Then when the cocoon opens and the butterfly first emerges

They are flightless, vulnerable

And indeed many do not survive that period

So indeed it is a fool who says a butterfly is simply carefree

For a flitting butterfly has endured multiple stages of hardship

Yet continues to live in earnest

Unaware of the beauty and happiness they spread

Even to those who do not know their tribulations
