The moment she asked, "How far back in time can you go?" I knew I was going to do something stupid. It's this kind of sense you get when you're a young guy who's in love. She asks something, and you think, Whatever the answer to that is, it's not gonna be good. Then you watch helplessly as some really dumb boast floats out of your mouth.

Anyway, at the time she asked me, I'd never been any further back than Albert Einstein, and that was, for once, on a mission for Dad. So naturally, not having gone back much over a century, I said, "I can go all the way back to Adam and Eve, if you want!" Because a young guy in love always overestimates his abilities by a factor of sixty, give or take. Right.

In all honesty, I'm pretty proud of how the time machine did. I mean, we did make it to Bible times. We actually even made it to Genesis. I'm just not so pleased we wound up coming down in the middle of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Trust me, rush hour traffic is nothing compared to navigating a sky full of fire and brimstone.

On the plus side, though, Vi was so scared she clung to me the entire time, and a good while after we'd made it safely back to the twenty-first century, too. Yeah, she was kinda mad at me afterwards. But I'm not about to forget the way it felt, her arms around me so tight it was hard to steer, knowing I was the only person in the world who could protect her right then. Not the most romantic of scenes maybe, but still pretty special. Hey, you take what you can get when you're in love.
