The Beauty of the Earth
He had tried to tell her she was beautiful thousands of times, and every time she had denied it, smiling as though it was all a joke. He turned to thinking of imaginative ways of telling her of her beauty.
"You are like an emerald."
"If I am an oyster," (after one night of playful name-calling) "then you are the pearl."
"You are the diamond in the night sky."
All of these she brushed off with her all-knowing smile and pulled him into a warm embrace. She said "Yero, my hero" and everything instantly faded from his mind. She kissed him and it made him forget.
When she left him, however, to search for food or visit the Animal camp nearby, his mind returned to finding a compliment for Elphaba that wouldn't cause her to cringe.
Inspiration came to him one day when Elphaba was changing her dress. Her back was turned to him. He studied her jade skin and the clear lines her body made. Elphaba was not ugly; just green.
She turned back to him when he whispered her name.
"Elphaba, my love, come and sit beside me."
She did so and he took her hands and kissed them. Her skin was cool on his lips.
"Elphaba." He stared into her eyes, as clichéd as he could be. "You have the beauty of the earth."
She pulled away, offended.
"What in Oz do you mean, Fiyero?" She spoke frostily, although hurt was in her eyes.
"No, no, not in a bad sense, my sweet." He hurried to clarify his meaning. "Your skin is the colour of the morning grass and shines as the grass does when glimmering with morning dew. Your eyes take the colour of the winter trees and glint with life as the sun rises as the trees live when spring arrives. You have the beauty of the earth."
Elphaba arched an eyebrow, smiling. "Fiyero, that is one of the most ridiculous things you've ever said to me, and I love you for it."
She let him kiss her and touched his face. "And your diamonds take the colour of the sky and of the water. You are like water to me, my sweet. Staying with you may get me killed, yet I need you to live." Her voice grew solemn. "If I lost you, Yero, I don't know what I'd do."
"But you won't lose me, Fae, I promise."
She lay beside him and took his hand, relishing the warmth and feeling of protection in gave her.
They slept, that cold night before Lurlinemas Eve, in peace.
"Fae."
"Mmm?"
"You are the beauty of the earth."
