A cry erupted from the next room.
"Case, your turn," Derek mumbled. She smacked his arm weakly.
"No way," Casey growled into her pillow. "It was my 'turn' the last twenty times. You get up." He lay still. She rolled her eyes, stumbled out to the hall and into the nursery. Casey scooped up the crying baby and started rocking her gently. The wails didn't cease. Suddenly, a warm hand touched her shoulder. She looked up.
Derek stood behind her, his hair messy, eyes sleepy.
"I got it," He stated flatly, transferring the child from Casey's arms to his. "Go back to sleep." He leaned down and kissed her cheek. "Go," He repeated, shooing her away with his free hand. Casey thanked him tiredly and retreated to the hall. She glanced back into the nursery.
Derek was swaying back and forth, murmuring to the baby.
"Go to sleep, Mia. Please. I really, really wanna go back to bed." Mia stared up at her father. He sighed, and started to hum softly. The baby's eyes closed as she drifted back to sleep. Derek gently set her down in her crib, and strode to the door.
"I thought I told you to go back to sleep," He muttered, rubbing his eyes.
"I was waiting for you," she said quietly. He smiled weakly, and slipped an arm around her waist.
"Why, thank you. I'm honored," Derek murmured sarcastically, steering her down the hall and into their bedroom, both still half-asleep. They slid under the covers. Derek wrapped his arms around Casey. She leaned against his chest, and he tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I love you," She whispered. He smiled.
"I love you, too."
Suddenly, Mia wailed again. Both adults groaned.
At once, Casey and Derek mumbled,
"It's your turn."
