This is kind of a prequel to something I'm planning for NaNoWriMo this year. Hope you like it!

December 25th, 2005

The Doctor was talking with Rose, Jackie and Mickey when it happened.

A loud noise made them all jump as a green beam shot into the sky. It met with four other beams and shot upwards, destroying the Sycoraxian ship.

He turned to face Harriet Jones, furious. "That was murder."

She tried to reason with him, to justify what she'd just done. "That was defence. It's adapted from alien technology. A ship that fell to Earth 10 years ago."

"But they were leaving."

"You said yourself, Doctor. They'd go back to the stars and tell others about the Earth. I'm sorry, Doctor, but you're not here all the time. You come and go. It happened today - Mr Llewellyn and the Major. They were murdered. They died right in front of me while you were sleeping. In which case - we have to defend ourselves."

"Britain's Golden Age." His voice was full of disdain, but there was a little voice in his head, reminding him that Harriet Jones had tried to do the right thing. It sounded suspiciously like his eighth self. The voice was wearing him down, though. He was responding almost automatically to Harriet now.

Until she challenged him, anyway. "Don't challenge me, Harriet Jones. 'Cos I'm a completely new man. I could bring down your Government with a single word."

"You're the most remarkable man I've ever met," she admitted. "But I don't think you're quite capable of that."

"No, you're right. Not a single word. Just six."

"I don't think so." She was getting worried now.

"Six words."

"Stop it!" ...and he did. The voice of reason in his head had taken over for a moment and he found himself walking back to join Rose.

Looking back on that moment, he realised that that split-second decision had changed everything.

The Master had been unable to take over the Earth because the British Government, specifically the Prime Minister was behind him every step of the way.

The most important thing that had happened was meeting her.

She had saved him, brought him out of the depression that losing Rose had caused.

She was the reason he had been reunited with Jack, had worked with his team. She was his friend.

Sally Sparrow. And she was... brilliant.

What do you think of the idea? Yay or nay?
Leave me some feedback, I don't mind.
The actual story will probably go up between the middle and end of November, because I need a) time to write the thing, b) time off for my birthday, which is mid-November and c) time off for the 50th anniversary.
Anyway... don't forget to review!

Oh, on the topic of stories going up, I am having trouble with chapter 4 of Locating Rose Tyler. I'll try to put it up before the end of October.
