Summary – Drabble (330 words). It's New Year's Eve.
It's New Year's Eve and he's in London. It could just as easily have been Prague or Paris but the online booking service listed the available flights alphabetically so he's standing in Trafalgar Square with thousands of strangers.
The clock's ticking towards midnight and the crowd begin to count down, their chanting growing louder as it rushes towards him like a wave. He feels a tingle of excitement break through the cloud of exhaustion that's been dragging him down for weeks. The air is buzzing with energy and he tilts his face upwards, drinking it in.
The sea of nameless people start singing and he finds himself linking arms with his neighbours. They sway in time with the music and he blindly follows, laughter bubbling in his throat. This is insane, the nagging voice of James Wilson, Head of Oncology reminds him, but he quashes it ruthlessly, leaning down instead to accept a good luck kiss from the woman on his right.
The party moves on to a hotel and he claims himself a space near the bar, his body sliding further down the chair as he begins to unwind. These nameless strangers are friendly, particularly to an American tourist who's alone on New Year's Eve.
It's not until he's walking back to his hotel in the early hours of the morning, his hands tucked in his pockets to shield them from the cold, that he remembers he's got his cell. It'll be almost midnight back in Princeton and there's someone who'll be expecting him to call.
For a moment he falters, his thumb rubbing gently across the numbers on the keypad. Then with a shake of his head he carries on walking, his lips drifting into a smile. Maybe this was an insane idea, he tells himself, but there's a reason why tonight he's not in Princeton, Prague or Paris.
He'd made himself a New Year's resolution. Just for one night he wasn't going to care - about anyone.
