I Love You

"Mummy! Mummy!" a voice yelled from the bedroom.
"Thomas!" Thomas' mother asked frantically.
She sighed with relief when she saw her 8 year old son lying in his bed with a smile.
"Thomas, you know it makes me worry when you do that..." She trailed off, scowling.
"I know, I know." He said with a sweet smile. "I'm sorry. Now, can you read me a story?"
Sighing, Thomas' mother sat on the edge of the bed and took the book he was holding.
"Just one," She whispered, and Thomas snuggled further into his bed.
As she read, Thomas' eyes slowly closed and he began sucking on his thumb. His mother smiled down at him. So innocent, she thought. She couldn't imagine why anyone would ever want to hurt her little boy.
Things had started to get worse. More and more people were being infected with the disease they called 'The Flare.' Thomas' father had it – and he got crazier by the day. At the beginning, subtle things would make him angry. If there was no milk he would scream, if there was a traffic jam, he would rip his own hair out. It was tough, but it got worse when Thomas' mother found out she too had The Flare.
Thomas was immune, and she knew there were people out there that would be cruel towards him due to this fact.
"Thomas, I just want you to remember..." Thomas' mother trailed off and sniffled. "Just remember that no matter what happens, I will always love you." She whispered and kissed the copper-haired boy.
She stood and turned off the bedrooms light. She glanced back at Thomas peacefully sleeping as she closed the door.
