Matthew sighed, laying on the couch and contemplating why he even bothered to get up in the first place. Perhaps, he thought, It was because I hoped they would remember… But they didn't.

Once again, Matthew's family forgot that today, July 1st, was his birthday.

Sighing again, Matthew brought a hand through his soft, wheat-blonde hair, about to just give up and go back to bed when something shook him out of his reverie. He turned his head towards a soft tapping on the window, only to see it was a small yellow puff ball. Walking towards it, he realized it was "Gilbird..?" he muttered, "But he's always around Gilbert… Does that mean..?" ignoring his own questions, Matt raced towards the window, seeing it was his boyfriend, Gilbert, waving up to him, a tiny yellow bird resting on his head. Grinning, Matt ran outside and lept into his lover's arms, earning a cheerful laugh and a kiss.
Matt giggled, "Gil! what are you doing here?"

"Kesesesesese~," Gil laughed, "I couldn't let mein birdie be alone on today of all days!"

Matt felt relieved. "You didn't forget?"
"Nein, I would never!" Gil declared, "but, I do have an important question for you…"

Matt looked at him confused…that is, until Gil knelt down on one knee. gasping, Matt brought his hands over his mouth.
Gil cleared his throat, for once not appearing so confident. "Birdie," he began nervously, "We have been together for ten years, and I can't see myself with anyone else… so, will you do me the the honour," he opened a small velvet box, revealing a plain silver band adorning a red, maple leaf shaped gem, "and marry me?"

Beyond words, Matt could only nod to his new fiance, who grinned brightly. Giving Gil his hand, Matt watched with teary eyes as Gill slipped the silver ring on his finger. Matt lept into his lover's arms for a second time, pulling him into a sweet kiss.

Holding his fiance tight, Gil smiled and kissed Matt's forehead. "Happy birthday, birdie."
