The Great Bears
The trees were as tall as giants, they were so high they blocked out the sunlight making the ground below dark and eerie. But she didn't feel afraid, if anything she felt at home in the forest. She spent as much of her time as possible there, trying to escape her parents arguing. The trees clamed her in a strange way. She was there just like any other day when something happened. She was sat cross legged drawing on a piece of parchment when there was rustling in the bushes nearby. Hardened on tales of child killing beasts she sprang up and scanned the area around her. Suddenly something broke through the dense bushes to the right side of her. Her eyes moved to the area the noise had come from and suddenly found herself feeling very afraid. A child of 9 should never have to come face to face with what she did. One of the fabled great bears of Bear Island stood before her. Its small eyes centred on her small frame. The giants head lifted in the air its nose twitched as it smelled the air around it. Its mouth opened slightly to reveal large teeth beneath. The girl held her breath trying not to move like her father had told her. Despite her stillness the bear still advanced on her, clear in its intent. Large globs of saliva were starting to mass around the beasts mouth, showing its excitement at the prospect of its next meal. The girl slowly stepped backwards as quietly as she could but the God's clearly weren't on her side that day as when she took that step a branch broke under her foot. The bear reared up on its hind legs and let out an ear piercing roar. The girl panicked and screamed all the while scrambling backwards trying not to take her eyes off of the bear. Her foot caught on a vine and she fell backwards landing on her back and winding herself in the process. The bear landed back onto four feet with a thud, it started to lumber towards her, every step making the ground shake. On all fours it stood taller than any man and on two legs it was close to a giant. The beast got ever closer until it was looming over her. It roared in her face and the girl closed her eyes waiting for the inevitable to occur. All of a sudden there was a rapid flurry of thudding noises in front of her and then the pained cries of the bear could be heard. She opened her eyes to see a great white bear stood over the brown bears body. The brown bear was writhing around trying to lock its jaws around the other bears neck. The white bear swiftly clamped its jaws around the other bears neck and proceeded to break it effortlessly. The girl gasped surprised by the turn of events and the fact that the bear had saved her. The strangest thing was that the girl was inside the bears body looking through its eyes, she was the one that had just killed the brown bear. She turned her large head towards herself to see her small frame sat in the damp leaves. Her eyes completely white. The bears vision started to falter as the girl returned to her own body. Her eyes returned to their usual shade of green before the girl fell into unconsciousness. Before her eyes closed she saw the bear above her. She could swear she heard a voice right before her eyes closed. It said "Do not worry little one I will protect you". After that she was consumed by darkness.
