A/N – I decided to do a companion piece to "Don't Fence Me In," so you might want to read that first. I do not own Doctor Who, Torchwood, or Just One of Those Things.
Just One of Those Things
Jack was sitting in his office when he heard that familiar sound. It seemed to be coming from right over his desk. He jumped away just as the TARDIS appeared and broke his desk.
He was still on the ground when the Doctor stepped out, grinning away. He watched as the Doctor's grin faded as he looked down.
"What're you doing down there, Jack?" the Doctor asked in the tone of voice he reserved for the Captain.
"Appreciating the view," he replied before standing up. "What're you doing here, Doc? And why'd you land on my desk?"
"Did I?" the Doctor asked before turning and seeing for himself. "Ah, well. It's not like you really used it. No harm done."
"Okay," Jack said, "But why did you land here?"
He watched as the Doctor grinned widely before replying. "I have a few people I'd like you to meet."
The Captain was unsure of what was going on, but agreed to meet whoever (or whatever) these "people" were.
The Doctor told Jack to follow him into the TARDIS before disappearing inside the doors. Jack smiled softly before entering. When he saw that the Doctor was far ahead of him, he ran to catch up.
They walked for about an hour, or at least it felt like an hour, it's hard to tell in the TARDIS, before the Doctor finally stopped in front of a door.
Panting just a little, Jack asked him why they had to go so far. The Doctor just grinned away.
"Okay, everyone I want you to meet is in here," he told the Captain. "Oh, I'm so excited! I can't wait to see your face when you see everyone! This is going to be fantastic!"
The way the Doctor was getting hyped up was worrying Jack, and making him a little suspicious. He still wasn't sure the Doctor had completely gotten over Torchwood's little prank the other week.
"Can we just go in?" he asked impatiently.
The Doctor stopped talking, grinned yet again, and nodded. He then slowly reached out and opened the door.
As Jack peered in, all he saw was pitch black. The Doctor then pushed him in, walked in himself and turned on the light.
The Captain's eyes were wide as he took in about 30-something people, and 7 aliens, that he'd had some kind of relationship with in the last two years. Even Captain John Hart and Ianto were there.
He turned around to ask the Doctor what the hell this was, but he wasn't in the room. The door was closed, and Jack could hear the lock being turned.
"Doctor?" he called out as Ianto came over to him.
The young Welsh man looked at his leader and asked, "Jack, who are all these…people?"
Jack, not wanting to answer, turned to the door again and yelled, louder, "Doctor?"
Suddenly the Doctor's voice was projected through the whole room.
"Ahem. Hello humans, aliens, and Jack. This is the Doctor speaking. I'd just like to do a quick introduction. Right then, Jack, you already know everyone. Everyone, you all have been with Jack sometime in the past two years. Please, take as much time as you need to catch up. Thank you."
When Ianto looked at Jack with a shocked and hurt expression, he had to turn away. He decided to try again.
"Doctor! I'm sorry I tricked you before! I'll never do it again! I promise! Please, let me out!"
In response, music started playing.
It was just one of those things. Just one of those crazy things. One of those bells, that now and then rings. Just one of those things.
It was just one of those nights. Just one of those fabulous flights. A trip to the moon, on gossamer wings. Just one of those things.
"Well played, Doc. Well played," Jack murmured to himself.
Somewhere in the TARDIS, the Doctor was laughing.
