It was dark and ominous that night. Clouds hung heavy over the small city of Karakura Town ready to burst at any moment. Most were warm and dry in their homes that night, except for the few heading home. On this night a woman and her son made their way home.

The young boy with bright orange hair held a bright smile on his face as he walked hand in hand with his mother. She was his everything, and in turn he was hers. Neither knew what they would do without the other.

Walking down the sidewalk something caught the little boy's attention across the street. There on the bank of a swollen river stood a girl. To the boy it looked as though she was about to jump in. So, he took it upon himself to stop her from taking her own life.

Letting go of his mother's hand he ran headlong towards the girl with his mother hot on his heels. He was young and untrained. How would he have known that this was just a trap? As he drew closer towards the girl a monster appeared behind her. At the site of such a creature he stopped dead in his tracks.

No words escaped his gaping mouth as the 'girl' became part of the monster. A shiver ran through his tiny body as it howled towards the sky before charging. Before it got to him his mother had picked him and began to run with him. She was not fast enough though for the monster pierced right through her. Immediately she fell forward with the boy pressed between wet cement and her.

He hadn't seen the girl coming, but the screech of pain was unmistakable. The monster had been wounded but had escaped before receiving any further injuries. It was then that a girl in black appeared by his side. With ease she lifted his mother's body off of him. Had it not been for the rain he would have been soaked in her blood, but the rain diluted it.

For a moment his eyes stared into those of the strangers' before looking down at the now lifeless body in her arms. Overcome by shock he passed out just as another figure in black arrived.

Hushed voices filled his ears. One voice he recognized to be his father's, but he was unable to place the other voice. Cracking his eyes open the first thing he saw was the smiling face of his mother. Then just like that the memories of what had happened came flooding back into his mind. The moment she died in his mind he jerked up in the bed as screams of fear erupted from his lungs.

The bed sank down by him as his small body was pulled into that of his father's. While his father held him a smaller hand was placed on his back rubbing circles as the unfamiliar voice whispered softly to him. With tears still leaking from his eyes and snot pouring from his nose the boy looked up from his father's chest to see the woman from earlier. His focused on those green eyes filled with so much sorrow and regret. What did she have to regret? She hadn't killed his mother.

Shaking her head the woman stood up speaking softly to his dad before leaving the room. It was then that he realized his dad was rocking back and forth. The movement made him sleepy as he slowly closed his eyes before slipping off into a dreamless sleep. All the while the question of who that woman was raced through his mind. He would have to ask his dad who that was, until then he would just sleep.
