Chapter1 Midnight Pondering
The lake glistens, reflecting the half moon off its surface, it's a calm night and yet the cool water still ripples from the slight breeze that lifts her distinctly red hair about her face, making it dance like the orange embers from a heated fire. The sky is cloudless and alight with the patterns of twinkling stars that seem to stretch on forever, reminding her of those nights camping out in her back garden with her Dad and sister Petunia when she was younger.
They would play games with the stars and her dad would tell her about all of the different worlds up in the sky, naming her and her sister the princesses of all of them. Sometimes her mum would visit them in the middle of these games to provide rations and blankets, Petunia would get annoyed that they were interrupted but her Dad would simply laugh and tell them that they should show a little more respect because Mum was the queen of all the worlds and it was her job to rule over all of the magical beings and creatures. Of course she was only eight so she hadn't know back then that-
"Lily?" A voice whispered from somewhere behind her "We've been looking everywhere for you." Two tall girls one with coiling dark mahogany brown hair, the other with shoulder length straight blonde hair, both with periwinkle blue eyes emerged from behind the large willow tree.
Grace McKinnon and her twin sister Marlene were the definition of flawless, if Lily hadn't been such good friends with them, she would have despised them on account of their beauty and like ability. All three of them along with Alice Prewett and Dorcas Meadows had been sorted into Gryffindor when they first arrived at the school as little eleven year olds and had become fast friends. They were very different to one another but they still managed to get along. Alice was athletic and lived for quidditch; she spent most of the time that wasn't taken up by school work checking up on where the Holyhead harpies were in this seasons league and playing seeker for the Gryffindor house Quidditch team. She was very small with very fair hair that was more often than not scraped back in a messy bun and had warm honey coloured eyes. Grace was very stuck in the past and dramatic, she would flounce around the girls dormitory in her many periodic dresses whilst reciting Juliet's lines and sighing which often made the other girls giggle. Dorcas was a gossiper, she always knew what was going on with everyone and loved to fill in her friends on all she had heard, she also had a terrible crush on Stubby Boardman, a singer for the hobgoblins band and would stick posters of him all about her four-poster bed, she had dark skin and long, sleek black hair that fell right down her back. Marlene was the risk taker, she never cared about what anyone thought of her, apart from her friends, she took no nonsense from anybody and was Lily's best friend.
"I'm fine, really. I just needed some fresh air is all."
"Your childhood friend insulted you in front of almost the entire year Lily Evans, you are not fine." Retorted Marlene, rolling her eyes and seating herself beside her best friend on the grass and fiddling with her red hair. "Do you want to talk about it?" Gracie's voice asked soothingly, plopping herself down on Lily's other side.
"Honestly, I am fine, better than fine, I'm happy even. You all were right, I should have ended our friendship as soon as he started with those stupid friends of his but I swear this is it, I can't do this with Sever- Snape again." said Lily confidently, running her fingers absentmindedly through the grass and swirling her feet around in the lake.
They say in silence for a while, listening to the sounds of the water sloshing off the bank, the wind whistling through the branches of the willow and the noises of the creatures that resided deep in the forbidden forest.
"James was asking after you, wanting to know if you were alright." Stated Gracie. Lily nodded just nodded; of course he was, it's all he ever did.
A strong gust of wind broke through the trees making all three girls shiver.
"Lets go back inside, it's late, it's cold and I don't know about you two but I need my beauty sleep." Marlene insisted, pulling Lily up with her and dragging her along towards the illuminated castle, none of the three girls noticed the pair of cold black eyes watching them from the shadows, a pair of cold black eyes that leaked cold tears as they looked down at their left arm, a left arm that now sported a mark. A dark mark.
