Muggle filth and Jerks

Petunia was heartbroken. The Evans family had just shifted to Cokeworth, enrolling Petunia and Lily Evans into the nearest public school. And it was at this school that Petunia, at the tender age of nine, had begun to admire a boy.

This dark haired boy had been the only one who hadn't teased her mercilessly for her appearance. Severus Snape had been quiet and reserved, and suffering a considerable amount of ridicule himself. His clothes were a bit shabby, but what did that matter when he was the best of the children in her class? What did that matter when he was the most well mannered of them all?

One day, Lily had stood up for Severus and chastised the other students for their behaviour. And she was so likeable, so perfect, that they had ceased their taunting for a while. Although, Petunia was most troubled by the grateful look in Severus Snape's eyes. She resented her sister for being better, again, and resolved to get closer to Severus.

Somehow, her classmate had allowed her to approach him and Petunia basked in the company of the boy. Finally, she had managed to strike up a conversation with the tall boy!

Yet, he still didn't smile much. Nor contribute something meaningful to their discussion so far.

After a while, Severus blurted out, his eyes brimming with curiosity, "Did you do the magic in the garden yesterday?" Severus had been unable to see which one of the sisters had been hovering a white flower in the air earlier. His father had dragged him back home as soon as possible. He always did.

Petunia's face fell slightly, "No...Lily did it, if that's what you're calling it."

Severus' expression changed. Now he understood. They were mudbloods. Correction, Petunia's sister was a mudblood. Petunia was something even worse. A common, filthy Muggle like his father. His mother had warned Severus not to get close to them.

He immediately recoiled in disgust. "Well then, go and take your filthy blood somewhere else, horse-neck!"

Petunia started tearing up. Her only friend, made not more than a few hours ago, had turned on her.

Severus became uncomfortable, he had never seen anyone except his mother cry. He was not certain what to do at those times, and nor was he sure now. Thus, he asked the kind of question a young boy would, albeit edged with disgust, "Are you crying?"

"I'm NOT crying, okay?! I'm allergic to jerks!"

Devastated, Petunia stormed away, determined not to show her weakness to Se-, no, to Snape anymore.

Even as she left, envious of her sister (Blast her and her freakishness!) she knew two things.

Deep in her heart, she still adored Severus Snape. An adoration which would never be returned.
