I do not own Hetalia: Axis Powers. I just enjoy writing about the characters.
This was just a little fic I wrote from a challenge to help with some writer's block. The challenge was: write about America/Liechtenstein for all ages and use the words hand, tribute, and aggressive. Hope you enjoy it!
The war against Clubs was finally coming to an end. Negotiations were in progress and the treaty was inevitable. None of the kingdoms could afford to lose any more troops and morale was at an all time low. While those causalities were terrible, the pain of losing royalty was even worse. Spades and Hearts had fared the best overall. Their queens had both been seriously injured, but had survived. Diamonds and Clubs were not so lucky.
King Ivan had been slain in battle, one of the reasons Clubs was essentially forced to surrender. Even a kingdom as strong as Clubs couldn't maintain a war without its royalty intact. Queen Elizabeta was forced to see the wisdom and had begun the negotiations herself. Ivan's death was shocking, but it didn't resonate through the entire world like another.
The Queen of Diamonds, Lily, was dead. An assassin had managed to breach the palace security and deliver the fatal blow. It was instantaneous and nearly everyone stood frozen as she fell. The assassin was quick, but Lily's aggressive brother was quicker. Protective of her in life, the Jack of Diamonds had executed his vengeance swiftly. The assassin fell just as quickly as his victim.
Not even a month after her death, the peace treaty was signed to end the war. The news was hushed until just before the signing of the treaty. No one could know how weak Diamonds really was until the danger had passed. During the signing, King Francis was composed but cold towards the Clubs delegation. While Lily had officially been his wife, their relationship had more like one of siblings and Francis had been nearly as distraught as Vash over her death. Vash himself stayed behind since it was obvious to those who knew him that the Clubs delegation wouldn't leave alive if he was there.
Surprisingly, King Alfred of Spades was furious with Clubs as well. Unbeknownst to most of the world, he and Lily had been very good friends. Despite her youthful looks, they were nearly the same age and had taken their respective thrones within months of each other. The close relationship between Spades and Diamonds was enhanced as they kept up a constant stream of letters to each other. Reports of each kingdom's status were interspersed with funny stories and anything that came to mind. These letters were one of the only places they could be themselves.
Even during the war, they still kept up with their letters. It was when they stopped coming that Alfred realized something was terribly wrong. Diamonds had been forced to bury its queen in secrecy in order to hide their weakness. It was in a private room that Francis relayed the news to Alfred before the signing of the treaty.
Now that the war was over, Alfred had planned a tribute to Lily, his best friend. He erected a small monument on the border between Diamonds and Spades. A single flower graced the marble, a lily to stand for the one they had lost. As Vash stood next to his sister's memorial, Alfred dared to lay a hand on his shoulder. His grief was so apparent he never shook it off, just took comfort in the presence of someone else who had loved her.
When Alfred and Arthur, his queen, adopted their daughter, the name was obvious. Young Lily was a frequent visitor to her uncles Vash and Francis in Diamonds, who would quietly smile at the little blonde as she played. Queen Lily herself was gone, but she was not forgotten.
Just a short fic to help with writer's block, as I said. Hopefully I will be doing a few more since I found a list of challenges. Reviews really encourage me to keep writing. Thanks for reading! ~Amaya
