Silence is deadly. When nothing else can fore you to speak, it can. The hush can surround you, smothering you with its weight until you can't do anything except scream in hopes that the silence will disappear. It will, but only until you lose your breath and the scream is gone. Stillness will take this opportunity to latch onto you once more until you confess. Then, one the confession is made; you are punished with never-ending silence.
Namine clutched at her hands, feeling this silence as her mother stared at her. The look on her mother's face was a hard one: not one of tough love. This was the look you gave a man in a courtroom… the look you gave a prostitute talking to your boyfriend… the look you gave to a daughter who had done the unbelievable. Namine wasn't sure why her mother brought her to the living room, but the fear was pulsing in her as though it was her blood. "M-mom?" Namine spoke in a quiet voice, as though silence might choose her side if she tired her hardest not to break it. "Is something wrong?"
Namine's mother continued glaring at her daughter: expression grim. "Namine," there was none of the warmth of a mother's voice, "Is there something you want to tell me?"
Namine's mind quickly went to work, going through everything wrong she could have possibly done to deserve this treatment. "I-I don't think so," she murmured, refusing to meet her mother's glare.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you!" she snapped, and Namine quickly brought her head up, biting her lip to keep back the tears. "I'll ask you again, and no lies this time." Her voice dropped to a growl, "Is there something I should know?" Namine kept silent, knowing she didn't have the answer readily available for her mother… she never did. "Namine, can you tell me what this is?" Namine watched her her mother picked up a folded piece of paper. It was notebook paper, folded into fourths. The blood drained from Namine's face when she recognized the bright pink ink from her friend's note. Ignoring Namine's expression, her mother opened the note and read aloud, from Namine's entry in the note exchange, "It's really strange… I just can't compare the two feelings. I think I might be a lesbian."
Namine clenched her fists, "I-I'm sorry." She winced as her mother ripped the note up and threw it to the ground. "I'm really sorry Mom."
"Sorry? Sorry!" Her mother stood up angrily, "This is absolutely disgusting!" She was now screaming at her daughter, who could do nothing but wince and take it. "Do you have any idea what you're even doing!? That's just disgusting and unholy! You will burn in Hell and bring us all down with you!" A fire of hatred burned in the mother's eyes as she screeched at her younger daughter, "I raised you to be a pure girl, do you really hate me that much? Are you trying to spite me?!" Namine shook her head furiously, but nothing seemed to get through to her mother. "I can't believe you! Get out of this house you disgusting bitch!" Namine winced as though she had been slapped, and stood up quickly, running out the front door, swearing that she would never live in this house again.
I realize that this is short D: However, I want to clip all the events in a sort of chopped-up manner. I'll try and make the next chapter, and show more of Namine's personality and her family history.
