"You've got to be kidding me."
Sirius' groan could be heard all over the common room, and it was the first thing James heard as he walked down the staircase.
"What happened, Padfoot?"
"Well, apparently, Dumbledore feels the need to have a Christmas ball this year."
"A ball? Like a dance?"
"Yes, like a dance. Which probably means you need a partner as well." Sirius rolled his eyes.
James couldn't help it. His eyes darted towards the red-haired girl girl sitting at the corner of the room. Lily Evans was used to the hazel eyed stare, and she fought the urge to smile. She slowly looked up towards the source, and as the green met the hazel, she was pleased to see James Potter swallow heavily and look way.
Every. Single. Time.
Sirius rolled his eyes again as he saw where his best friend was looking at, and couldn't resist riling him up. "Hey Evans!", he called out, a wicked grin spreading over his face. "Fancy going to the ball with me?"
James looked as if he was about to combust.
Lily rolled her eyes (really, she did it almost as well as Sirius did) and got up. "You'll be late for Transfiguration, Black, and McGonagall's going to have your head on a plate. That should be fun." She smirked, climbing out of the portrait hole.
James and Sirius were sitting in the class as she ran in. HOW DID THEY DO IT?
They both smiled.
Every. Single. Time.
An hour later, both Lily and James found themselves with a single cauldron, attempting to Transfigure it into a trunk.
"Evans?"
"Hmmmm….?"
"I wanted to ask you something."
"NO Potter, I'm not giving you my Potions homework again. Professor Slughorn will know."
He muttered darkly and the words "old walrus" could be heard.
"I wasn't asking you for the homework, but thanks for reminding me."
"Then what?"
"Well, I was wondering, I mean, only if you want to, I thought it'd be fun, would you…possibly…..I mean, urgh!"
Lily smiled. This was fun.
Or maybe she should just put him out of his misery. Heaven knew Lily wasn't going to say no.
"Fine Potter, I'll go to the ball with you."
James' face lit up and Lily's heart started beating a little faster.
Sighing, she looked downwards at the cauldron so her flaming red hair could hide her flaming cheeks.
It didn't really work.
