Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.

- Sir Walter Scott

Darth Vader's life had been born of lies.

The Jedi. The Sith. The Republic. Padme. The Dark Side.

Palpatine had lied to Anakin ever since he first met him, slowly yet steadily manipulating him down the path of a Sith.

It was Palpatine's lies that drove Anakin to do so many things - the boy's instinctual distrust of the Council was enhanced by a few, carefully chosen words. Anakin's resentment towards Obi-Wan Kenobi was bolstered by simply implying that the man was jealous of his padawan's power. A declaration that Count Dooku was too dangerous to be kept alive proved that Anakin was capable of killing defenseless prisoners. And, a short little fairy tale about Darth Plagueis and his powers was enough to send Anakin running to destroy the Jedi.

And so, the Emperor's lies grew more and more intricate, molding Vader into a man who was blinded to his master's manipulations.

For eighteen years Vader dutifully served his former mentor, doing whatever was asked of him. And just as he was sure Anakin Skywalker was gone forever, banished to the far reaches of his mind, something happened.

"I'm Luke Skywalker! I'm here to rescue you!"

And with those eight words, Vader's world, so carefully constructed by lies, was destroyed.
