I recently read October Sky, and I totally loved it. As a finishing touch to our October Sky unit, our English teacher had us do these activities. We had to write a poem out of one of the chapters, so I chose chapter 18. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the movie or read the book (well, I haven't seen the movie,) but this might serve as a cliffhanger for you guys who haven't seen or read it. Anyway, here's a poem. It's not very long, it had to be between 75 and 100 words long.

Disclaimer: I do not own the October Sky characters, seeing as they're real people.

Selfish

I returned from the dance

That storming night

To find my mother

Sitting in a fright

I was so confused

What had went on?

Then my mother said,

"Your father has gone,"

There was a lightening strike

And then a fall

The miners were trapped

And hurt, most of all

I would not go to the mine

She told me to stay

But I disobeyed her

And I went my own way

I went out my window

And down the street

The people of Coalwood

Were there to meet

The crowds were so large

The mothers would cry

The children were silent

Their fathers could die

My mother appears

she strikes my cheek

She calls me selfish

I fell pathetic and weak.

Am I selfish?

Maybe I am

I think as I see the men

This wasn't my plan

I don't think it's very good, but apparently, my teacher disagrees, seeing as I got full credit. Heh. Ironic, huh? Well, that's that. Also, I'll be posting another part of my project. It's chapter 17 rewritten to Valentine's point of view.

If you haven't read my other stories, try them out. I will try to update whenever I can. Words of advice: don't try to run three stories at once.

Go Rocket Boys!
