Fury stared at the pair of them. They were an unlikely pair. Spider-Man, the teenage vigilante and Captain Marvel, one of the most powerful entities in the universe. They were watching a movie, just the two of them. Parker was sprawled across the couch, his head in Carol's lap. He was laughing and smiling at the screen while she stroked his hair. This was seemingly innocent enough if you didn't notice how Carol was smiling and staring down at him lovingly(and not the parental kind) and various other things Nick had noticed over the past few weeks.
Fury leaned back in his chair and sighed. He had no idea what to do.
As secretive as he was, everybody knew Nick Fury liked to be in control and hated being left out of the loop. So when he missed 5 goddamn years of his life, you best believe he was going to find out everything that happened. The security cams at the compound were all destroyed but Stark, bless his soul, had everything backed up to his files which could be accessed by F.R.I.D.A.Y.
And while he found some interesting things, nothing more interesting than the final battle. He watched as Agent Barton dodged and weaved around Thanos' Children before passing the gauntlet to the King of Wakanda himself, T'Challa. The stones eventually ended up in Parker's hands. As he saw his old friend descend down from the skies to save him, Nick had to rewind to make sure he heard it right.
"Hey there Peter Parker. You got something for me?"
To anyone else, this would be nothing. But Fury had known Carol for years upon years, calling her down to Earth when he needed her. But never had he heard her sound so flirty. Carol Danvers was witty and sarcastic, sure but when she stepped onto a battlefield she was all business. No chitchat and definitely no flirting. Nick rubbed his eyes and sat down.
You're reading into this too much. Maybe you are getting too old for this.
Not 2 days later, Fury noticed something else. Carol was spending a little too much time with the teen. Not only had she requested to be placed in the room next to him but she did everything with him. They talked, watched movies, ate and played games together every single day. She even slept with Peter in her quarters and patrolled with him. Whenever another Avenger or adult talked to Peter he also couldn't help but notice she got possessive. She held onto his arms or hand or just rubbed his back, not wanting him to leave her. The others teased her, calling her overprotective or a mother hen and Fury almost chalked it up to that too before he noticed that she stared at him like he was God himself.
On one of the nights the team all ate together (Fury definitely didn't want to be apart of some "family" dinner but even he knew Pepper Potts wouldn't take no for an answer.) Carol was actually separated from Peter as Barnes and Wilson snagged the two seats next to him, complaining they didn't see him enough. And if everything else didn't confirm it, this did. Carol's eyes were constantly glancing at Peter before quickly looking away, repeatedly. Like a school girl not wanting to be caught staring at her crush. Fury was relieved he actually wasn't the only one who picked up on this. Agent Barton's eyes were narrowed as he stared at Danvers and followed her line of sight across the table.
After dinner, Fury approached Hawkeye.
"Clint."
He looked up.
"Sir?"
Fury dropped a bug into Hawkeye's hand.
"I need you to plant this in Captain Danvers' room."
Clint glanced toward her. She was already with Parker, immediately gravitating towards him after dinner was over.
"Consider it done."
As the weeks went by, the team slowly returned to their own homes. Agent Barton and his family returned to his farm house with promises to visit. T'Challa and his sister flew back to Wakanda, Thor and the Guardians went to space and Doctor Strange and Wong had been away from the Sanctum for too long. Now among of the visitors that had left, many people were surprised when Carol announced she was staying on Earth. Pepper and Peter were of course delighted, and she was immediately given her permanent room.
Everytime he had used his pager to contact her she never stayed long after the emergency. "Too many lives to save" she had always said. But it's been 3 months now and now she was staying on Earth permanently?
Fury was in his room, long after midnight. He picked up the receiver of the bug and listened.
He first heard snores. That's Parker. He heard a female voice and he cranked the volume up. Although she was speaking softly, Fury knew what she was saying.
"I love you Peter Parker. You're mine, no one else's but mine."
Fury sat down and turned the device off.
He had no idea what to do. He needed Parker's cooperation in the near future but Carol definitely would keep him to herself and out of danger. Fury wasn't a good man. Years of being the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a spy meant you needed to make tough choices, some that weren't always good or right. But even he saw messed up this was. Carol was in love with an underage boy. Mentally she was in her 60's and even if he just counted her age physically she was still older than him by a good amount. Parker was 16 for gods sake! He should sit Carol down or tell Pepper or do something! But he just sat there. Out of respect to his friend or something else entirely he did nothing and just watched.
