"And when you come back in I can say, welcome home" Delia smiled sweetly up at me. How I had longed to hear those words from her. She reached for her glass and clinked it against mine, toasting the future we were going to have together. As she sipped her lemonade next to me, gazing around our new apartment a look of wonder and contentment on her face, I couldn't help but thank the lord that I was so lucky as to have her in my life, even if only I knew it.
Placing my glass back down on the floor next to the blanket we had laid down as a sort of make-shift blanket, I reached out and placed my hand over hers. It was freeing, not to have to glance around for prying eyes, to see if anyone would catch on and try to put an end to all the happiness we had both worked for. She turned and smiled at me, eyes sparkling in the dim light. Giving her arm a little tug, I pulled her slightly towards me. She shuffled over, snuggling herself into my side, turning her head so it rested gently on my shoulder. It felt as though my heart skipped a beat as I felt her breath on my cheek, simultaneously sending a shiver down my spine.
"Oh my love are you cold?" She said turning and looking at me, face full of concern. "Would you like me to fetch your coat?" As she made to stand, the need to have her close became overwhelming. Reaching up I wrapped my hand around the back of her neck and with slightly more force than intended, once again pulled her towards me, this time bringing our lips together, hers feather soft against mine. As reflex I pulled away almost immediately, dropping my head slightly in embarrassment. I had never let my feelings boil over like that before, always so careful so as to keep our relationship a secret.
"Sorry… I don't…" she didn't let me finish my apology, crashing her lips back to mine, wrapping her arms around me. Usually when we had the chance to show our affection, the kisses had to be chaste and quick in case of intrusion, but this… this was like heaven. I could taste the bitterness of the lemonade on her lips, the sharpness of the peppermint creams she was so fond of, and something that was just, Delia. As we continued to kiss I felt her run her tongue along my bottom lip. We had only ever allowed ourselves to kiss in such a way once before, one night at the Nurse's home after a charity dance. I heard her let out a quiet moan, and reluctantly pulled away, resting my forehead against hers as we caught back our breath.
"We should get going, the other midwives will be wondering where I am" I sighed, "I did promise I would return for lunch with everyone"
Looking up I gazed into Delia's eyes, now a deep shade of purple, the passion palpable. "Yes I suppose we must" I leant forward, giving her a quick peck on the lips.
"Or…" and with that she tugged me back by the collar of my shirt, capturing my lips once more.
