"That's too pink."
"You said if I let you choose the drapes, I'd get to pick -"
"I know what I said," Paige sighed. "You can pick any color you want," she paused, "except that one."
Emily scowled at Paige, crossing her arms. "Well, what color would you pick?"
Paige scanned the palette of pinks in front of them for a moment before pointing to a soft, subdued color.
"What do you have against..." Emily leaned down to examine the small typeset on the color card, "Ultra Pink?"
"Nothing." Paige smiled. "Except that you have terrible taste in color."
"I have terrible taste?" Emily questioned, giving Paige a light and playful shove.
"Can I help you ladies with anything?"
Emily and Paige both shot around at the sound of the unfamiliar voice. It was a woman, probably in her early-20's, with short brown hair and big hazel eyes. She a sly grin across her face. The sales associate made eye contact with Paige, which Emily immediately picked up on.
"Well...we-"
"We're fine," Emily quickly interrupted.
"Em, let's get her opinion," Paige said with a slightly pouted lip.
Emily shot a look towards Paige's direction.
The associate pointed to the bag in Paige's hand. "Those your curtains?"
"Yeah," Paige replied, smiling.
"Mind if I take a look?"
Paige handed the other woman a piece of the fabric from the bag. Emily took a step back, crossing her arms again, looking a bit upset. She scanned the girl up and down and caught a glimpse of her name tag.
"Look, Angela, we appre-"
"I think this Dusty Rose would go perfectly with the curtains," the associate continued, cutting Emily off.
"See, Em, I told you!"
Emily huffed again.
"Is this your first apartment?"
"How'd you guess?"
Angela smiled as she took in Paige. "I see your type around here all the time." She paused and made a gesture towards Emily. "You two roommates?"
Paige blushed, "Well...I guess you could say that."
Emily took a step closer to Paige and wrapped an arm around her waist, drawing her nearer. She looked Angela straight in the eye and said, "I think what she meant to say was 'girlfriends'."
A silence lingered as Angela narrowed her eyes at Emily before turning to Paige to deliver one last smile.
Emily returned the glare. "Dusty Rose it is."
She scanned the shelves opposite them and quickly grabbed a gallon of the paint Paige had chosen.
"If there's anything else I can help you ladies with..."
Emily took Paige's hand and hurried towards the registers at the front of the store before Angela could even finish speaking.
Emily, still riled up, finally came to a stop at the third register. Paige just smiled at her.
"What?" Emily's tone was short and firm.
Paige just giggled under her breath and dipped her head.
"What?" Emily asked again, drawing out the vowel as a grin grew on her face.
Paige planted a kiss on her lips and whispered into her ear, "You're cute when you're jealous."
