Day One: Mail
----------
Riku hated mail. Most of the time it was junk mail anyways. He slipped into some pajamas and went outside to the box, rubbing his eyes gently. A delicate hand reached into the small cavern and grabbed the offending pieces of paper. Every day, without fail, the mail carriers managed to precisely deliver every last piece of the damned ads for restaurants (like he needed a coupon for a free drink at 7th Heaven, Tifa was his friend), the bills for water, which was all but too abundant in Radiant Garden, and, worst of all, charities begging for money which would probably end up lining their pockets anyway.
As he trudged back inside, he threw the stack of mail onto the table, with a huff, between Leon and Aerith, both of whom were enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. Riku sighed. He hated mail most of all because he hadn't heard from Cloud in ages. He knew the blonde would be away for a while, but the least he could do is write once in a while.
"Hey Riku!" Aerith hollered for him, "I have something here I think you might like!"
Riku nearly shouted with delight, before composing himself and sauntered casually into the dining room, tossing out a noncommittal, "Yeah?"
The brunette held a single envelope in her thin fingers and waved it lightly, almost as if taunting the lunar-haired man. "Guess who it's from?"
Riku plopped into the chair next to the flower girl and snatched the letter from her hands. It was addressed to Riku Masaki, from Cloud Strife. He couldn't believe it. The one thing he'd wanted most. (Aside from the blonde being with him that very moment.)
He slid the letter opener along the length of the envelope and pulled out a single piece of paper. He unfolded it and began to read.
My dearest Riku,
I know these past few months have been hard. I can't imagine how you're holding up, when I, myself, am a wreck. I should be coming home within a week, maybe a week and a half. I look forward to kissing you, holding you, lying next to you in bed with my arms wrapped around you. Words cannot describe the pain I felt when I saw the hurt in your eyes the day I left. I never want to cause the pain again.
Remember, I love you now, I loved you then, and I will love you forever.
Yours truly, with love,
Cloud
Riku broke down, he missed the older man so much. Aerith pulled the paper lightly from the sobbing teen's hand. "Wow." She handed the letter to Leon as she rubbed her hand around Riku's back, comfortingly.
"I'd never have Cloud pegged for the mushy type."
Riku didn't hear the scarred man's comment. Cloud was coming home soon. He decided silently that, maybe mail wasn't so bad…
