Hi. My name is Cassie.
The war is over. It doesn't feel like it. You could say we won. It doesn't feel like it.
We lost one of our members. My best friend. Rachel.
We also lost Ax. He was an Andalite. He might as well be dead. The Yeerks that survived captured him. They performed experiments on him. He now has a mouth where there shouldn't be one on an Andalite. There were teeth in his new mouth, not white, but red.
You're probably wondering how I know this. You thought I was back on Earth when Jake and the others found out about Ax, right? Well I wasn't. I was with them. They didn't know. I morphed to flea and went aboard the ship on Jake's head. I demorphed and hid. I found food, and I lived off of it for the whole journey. I was in the room when Ax's face came on the screen. I saw everything. Jake knew we wouldn't be able to run away from him. So he attacked. First he shot. Missed. Then the Yeerks shot. They missed too. Jake shot again, this time hitting their Dracon cannon. It wasn't gone, just disabled. Then Jake ran. It was a smart move because we all knew that they would use other weapons, but also knew it would take time to get them started.
He flew into Z-space and made it home, back to Earth, within weeks. Right after they all got off, I confronted Jake. He didn't look happy to begin with. I told him I went with him. I told him about knowing about Ax. He was furious.
"Why did you go? You could have been killed!" he shouted.
"B-because," I stuttered. I hope he didn't want to really know why I went, I didn't want to tell him the truth.
"Because why?" he demanded.
"Because I still love you!" I shouted, everyone around looked at me like I was crazy. I couldn't stand it. I needed to get out.
I concentrated on the osprey DNA running through my blood.
This time, the first thing to happen was the shrinking. I shot down at lightning speed. It felt like I was going to hit the ground. Then came the tattoo-like patterns of feathers on my arms and legs. Then the feathers popped out. Bones crunched and twisted. I knew it was supposed to hurt, but it didn't.
I was now completely osprey. I took off into the cold air.
"Cassie! Cassie come back!" I heard Jake shout.
I didn't want to. I wasn't going to. I was too angry. And scared. And sad.
I didn't know where to go. Tobias and Marco were with Jake. Rachel was dead. Ax was worse than dead. No one was there for me when I needed them most. I was like a lost soul, doomed to walk the planet forever. Only this wasn't going to last. Not if I could help it.
I flew. And Flew. And flew. I knew what I was going to do, but I had to find a place to do it.
Then I saw it: The Golden Gate Bridge.
I flew to the very top of it. It felt like it was a thousand feet up in the air.
I morphed to human. I stood on the edge. And jumped. It was a long way down. I felt so free. I smiled. And everything went black.
