Notes : Written before chapter 76, just a brief moment between Yuyuka and Mamura because I adore them so much (with Suzume). I still believe at that point of the story with only two chapters to go that Mamura and Suzume will end up together but YOU NEVER KNOW. Also English is not my first language, sorry for the mistakes.
She sees him on the beach. Alone. Not so long ago, she would never had the nerve to go talk to him, nor what she could say to him. She used to love him. Well, she used to love the idea of him. She hasn't been as devastated as she thought she would be when he rejected her. He did it so nicely and with such honesty.
'I'm sorry. I like somebody else.'
Even if she has moved on, it doesn't mean that anyone can have him she thinks while she approaches him.
'I'm going back to Tokyo.'
'So you let her go in the end,' she says, sitting besides him.
He turns his head, startled, but doesn't say anything.
'She called me before going back to Tokyo. Did you know that she called me that morning ? I swear I was going to kill her for waking me up that early but she couldn't wait. She wanted to tell me first before asking you out because she wanted to respect my feelings. That's the kind of person she is. But you already know that, don't you?'
'Mamura, Mamura told me to go'
He still doesn't say anything.
'I don't think I could have done the same thing. I admire you Mamura-kun. Always so chivalrous.'
'It's not that I want people to think I am,' he says finally, 'I just, I just want her to be happy. She's the only one who can make that choice.'
She has seen from the start how Mamura changed little by little since Suzume transferred to the school. Suzume can be pretty oblivious, especially when seafood is involved. But Yosano Suzume is also very honest, she doesn't feign emotions, she doesn't act (like her). She definitely would never have go out with Mamura if she didn't feel anything in the first place.
'I have to make sure that sensei is okay, and to hear what he has to say, I need to hear it, I don't want to be scared anymore, and i don't want to hurt people anymore.'
Idiot, she had wanted to say. You cannot control other people's feelings.
'Say, Mamura-kun, you really love her huh ? For what it's worth, I will not let her copy my homework until I die if she doesn't choose you.'
She sees him smile for just a split second, before his face turns back serious.
She keeps going, 'but you know, I threaten her all the times. To my disappointment, she never does anything that make me carry out those threats so... I have faith.'
Since when did she become an optimistic person ? It's not really her business and it's not like she has a say in this, but the only person she will accept to go out with him is her. She thinks about the day when she saw Suzume for the first time. That potato girl huh ? Who would have thought ?
He doesn't reply and she stands on her feet let him be with his thoughts. She starts to walk away when she hears him.
'Nekota. I'm glad that you found senpai.'
'Idiot.'
